On Thursday, TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis announced that the Longhorns are on his top-five schools list. Along with Texas, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Penn State, and Southern California round out the rest of Mathis’ list.
Mathis, an Austin-area product having graduated from Manor High School, joined Gary Patterson and the TCU Horned Frogs in 2018 after enrolling as a three-star prospect. As a result, the Longhorns appear to have the upper hand in the transfer’s recruitment as Gary Patterson has since joined the Longhorns as a special advisor to Steve Sarkisian.
Despite Texas’s rich incoming recruiting class, the Longhorns feel the need to pursue Mathis’ experience in the transfer portal after being unable to produce a consistent pass rush last season. In fact, in 2021, the Longhorns had a four-way tie for the team’s sack leader at a measly two sacks apiece
During his four seasons at TCU, Mathis provided the Horned Frogs with 133 tackles and 12.5 sacks. However, his most notable season came in 2020 when the edge rusher totaled 44 tackles and 8 sacks.
