Colin Simmons, Longhorns Defense Lead No. 1 Texas to 20-17 Victory Over No. 14 Tennessee

By Devon Messinger · Sep 26, 2026

This weekend, all eyes were on Arch Manning. He played in the stadium where his uncle, Peyton, starred from 1994-1997. However, the Texas defense stole the show once again as Colin Simmons led the way with an incredible five-sack performance in the team's 20-17 win over Tennessee.

After one drive, it looked like the Longhorns could turn on autopilot. Manning found Emmett Mosley for a 43-yard gain. Raleek Brown later scored on a 9-yard touchdown run. However, things changed quicker than a landslide in Knoxville. The Longhorns did not find the end zone again until 4:44 remained in the game.

Despite scoring only two touchdowns, Texas found a way to win. Stellar defensive play has become a theme for the Longhorns in recent years. That trend continued Saturday. Longhorns defensive coordinator Will Muschamp had plenty of talent at his disposal. His defense totaled 10 sacks against Tennessee. The constant pressure made life difficult for freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon. The Volunteers managed just 151 passing yards.
