The Texas Longhorns have added an unexpected boost to their 2026 roster as five-star defensive back John Meredith III has officially reclassified from the 2027 class and will join the program this fall.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian announced the news during SEC Media Days, confirming that Meredith III, who had already been committed to Texas, will enroll immediately and be part of the Longhorns’ roster for the 2026 season.
The move is a significant win for Texas. Widely regarded as the nation’s top cornerback in the 2027 recruiting class, Meredith III accelerates his college career and gives the Longhorns one of the most talented young defensive backs in the country.
At 6-foot-2, Meredith III possesses the size, length, and wingspan college programs covet at the cornerback position. He is a polished man-to-man defender with the speed to stay in phase against elite receivers, he has outstanding ball skills, and the physicality to be a reliable tackler in run support. His combination of athleticism, instincts, and coverage ability gives Texas another potential impact playmaker in the secondary.
The announcement comes after Meredith III was ruled ineligible to play high school football following his transfer from Euless Trinity High School to North Crowley High School. Rather than sitting out the season, Meredith III will now begin his collegiate career in Austin, allowing him to develop within the Texas football program while competing against SEC talent.
For Sarkisian and Texas, adding a player of Meredith III’s caliber strengthens an already talented defensive back room and provides another elite athlete capable of contributing to the program’s future. What was once expected to be a cornerstone of the 2027 recruiting class now becomes an immediate addition to the Longhorns’ 2026 roster.
