The Texas starting rotation suffered a major blow Thursday morning when it was announced sophomore pitcher Tanner Witt would undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the 2022 season. Witt was scratched from his scheduled start last Sunday due to the arm discomfort and underwent additional testing, which revealed the UCL injury.
Witt is projected to be one of the top 2023 prospects in the MLB draft. David Pierce will likely have to turn to sophomore lefty Lucas Gordon in Witt’s usual Sunday starting spot. Gordon has thrown 12 innings this year and has a .75 ERA to go along with 6 strikeouts.
The Longhorns are scheduled to open up a 3-game series at South Carolina tomorrow evening.
