After dropping their season opener to Louisville, the Texas Longhorns continue to win baseball games. Tuesday night’s 7-4 victory over UT-Arlington at UFCU Disch-Falk Field marked the 14th straight win for Jim Schlossnagle’s club, thanks to a productive eight inning from the Longhorns.
Ethan Mendoza delivered a two-run triple down the right field line, scoring Will Gasparino and pinch hitter Rylan Galvan to give Texas a 5-3 lead over the Mavericks. The Longhorns added two more insurance runs in the frame, courtesy of Jalin Flores’ sacrifice fly and Adrian Rodriguez’ RBI single. After eight innings the Longhorns held a 7-3 lead.
UT-Arlington did their best to make things interesting in the ninth, adding a run and bringing the tying run to the plate. Sophmore RHP Thomas Burns ended the inning with a pop fly to center field, sealing a 7-4 victory.
RHP Drew Rerick started his first game for the Longhorns, giving up one run in 2 2/3 innings pitched. He was replaced by RHP Jason Flores who pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings and gave up just one hit. RHP Hudson Hamilton pitched the sixth inning and gave up two earned runs on two hits. Bryce Navarre relieved Hamilton and pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up one earned run and two hits before being relieved by Burns.
Designated hitter Adrian Rodriguez amassed a three-hit game while first baseman Kimble Schuessler and center fielder Will Gaspario each had two hits.
