The Longhorns (39-8) drew a season-high 16 walks, with third baseman Casey Borba leading the charge. Borba walked in each of his first four plate appearances and ignited a five-run eighth inning with his ninth homer of the season.
His two-run shot put Texas ahead, 6-3, after the Cardinals (37-15) had closed the gap to one run. Catcher Rylan Galvan followed up with a two-RBI double, extending the lead for the home team.
Shortstop Jalin Flores added his team-leading 50th RBI, capping off the Longhorns’ 14th five-run inning of the year.
Left-hander Ethan Walker (1-0) earned his first career Division I win, pitching two hitless innings in relief. Righty Hudson Hamilton (1) secured his first career save, closing out the final two innings.
Lamar’s starter, Carter Sutton (5-3), took the loss, giving up three runs over 4 1/3 innings, with six walks and four strikeouts.
With the 9-3 victory, the Longhorns finished their midweek games with a 9-2 record. It appears they have also solidified a top-8 RPI which means they are in line to host a regional in Austin.
Next, the Longhorns will wrap up their regular-season home games with a three-game series against Florida at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
