The No. 1 Texas Longhorns (4-0, 0-0 SEC) begin play in the Southeastern Conference today as they host the Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-3, 0-1 SEC) at Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium. The matchup marks the fifth in history between these two programs, with the last taking place at the Cotton Bowl in 1999. In that contest, the Longhorns left Dallas with a 38-11 win behind Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams’ 203 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Both teams have been hit with injuries and it will show at kickoff. The Bulldogs are forced to start a true freshman at quarterback due to starter Blake Shapen suffering a season-ending injury last week against Florida. Michel Van Buren Jr. will lead the Mississippi State offense which ranks 67th nationally.
For the Longhorns, starting quarterback Quinn Ewers is questionable for the game and the ‘Horns have a slew of running backs that are injured. Behind Jaydon Blue, who appears to be healthy, the Longhorns hope to have Quintrevion Wisner back this week. Transfer Velton Gardner was injured in the UL-Monroe game last week and Colin Page is doubtful. The Texas running back room is currently very thin and next week’s bye couldn’t come at a better time. Redshirt freshman Arch Manning will get his second career start should Ewers not play again this week.
