Texas wins series 2-1
The Texas baseball team won their season-opening Big 12 series 2-1 when they secured Sunday’s rubber match over West Virginia, 5-1. Unlike Friday and Saturday’s games, the teams battled to a scoreless tie through five innings before the Longhorns struck for three runs in the home half of the sixth frame. The lead was the first one for Texas in the entire series.
West Virginia answered with a run of their own, a solo homer to right field by Shaun Wood , in the top of the seventh inning, but the Horns responded by scoring two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Collin Shaw had two hits on the afternoon, adding another double to his season total (13). Shaw also had 2 RBI and scored a run. The only other player with multiple hits was Bret Boswell.
Starting pitcher Chad Hollingsworth battled throughout the game, finishing with 7 IP and only allowing one run on five scattered hits. After the game, Hollingsworth admitted he did not have his best day, saying that only his fastball was controllable. Freshman Kyle Johnston threw the last two innings, allowing only two hits and no walks.
