Will Muschamp’s Defense Gave Texas Time to Find an Answer

For three quarters, the Texas offense struggled to find its rhythm against Ohio State. The Longhorns committed turnovers on their first two possessions, failed to finish drives and entered the fourth quarter trailing the nation’s No. 1 team 23–3.

A comeback remained possible because Will Muschamp’s defense refused to let the game get out of reach.

Texas held Ohio State to three points after halftime, giving Arch Manning and the offense enough time to recover. The Longhorns eventually scored 21 unanswered points to complete a historic 24–23 victory and move to No. 1 in the Associated Press poll.

Defense responds after halftime

Ohio State generated 372 total yards, but Texas tightened defensively when the game mattered most. The Longhorns limited quarterback Julian Sayin to 5-of-16 passing in the second half and kept the Buckeyes scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Colin Simmons helped change the game at the line of scrimmage, finishing with two tackles for loss and one sack. Linebacker Justin Cryer provided steady production behind him, leading Texas with nine tackles and adding a tackle for loss.

The pressure from the defensive front prevented Ohio State from controlling the second half and allowed Texas to gradually shift the momentum.

Littleton seals the victory

Texas still needed one final stop after Hollywood Smothers scored the go-ahead touchdown with 25 seconds remaining.

Sophomore cornerback Graceson Littleton delivered it by intercepting Sayin’s final pass. The play secured the comeback and continued Littleton’s productive start after he returned a fumble 59 yards for a touchdown against Texas State.

Texas has now forced a turnover in 25 consecutive home games, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

A new defensive identity

Muschamp was hired to make Texas more aggressive, disruptive and dependable in critical situations. Those qualities were visible against Ohio State.

The performance was not perfect. Jeremiah Smith still caught eight passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, and Ohio State produced several explosive plays. But Texas adjusted, increased its pressure and allowed only three points over the final two quarters.

That effort gave Manning and the offense the opportunities they needed. Texas’ final three touchdown drives covered 236 yards across 40 plays, turning a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit into the largest fourth-quarter comeback ever completed against an AP No. 1 team.

Manning, Smothers and Steve Sarkisian’s aggressive fourth-down decisions will receive much of the attention. But Texas found an offensive answer because Muschamp’s defense kept giving it time to search for one.
