Welcome back folks, and thanks to all our new people who have continued to make this site and our radio show “The Orange Report” grow by leaps and bounds. Being this is OU week, I honestly did not think we’d get a serious discussion out of the other side. With that in mind, I turned it over this week to the fans to ask a few questions. Some are not directly related to the game, yet another sign of where we are as a fan base and a program. Let’s get to it.
Question 1: If Texas gets blown out again this weekend, will Mack Brown be fired immediately?
The honest answer to this question is no. Brown is not Lane Kiffin, and we are not USC for starters. Though it is hard to believe, Texas will not lower its standard to something like that unless Brown just absolutely went rogue, and he won’t do that. A blowout will in all likelihood push up the time table for his retirement announcement.
Question 2: If the staff is so worried about Tyrone’s redshirt, why won’t they give a chance to Jalen Overstreet?
This one is hard to get a pulse on. Overstreet knows the entire offense and provides a definitive threat with his legs McCoy does not provide. I’ve tried to get a real answer on this, and the closest I’ve heard was he wasn’t “picking up the offense” which I do not believe for one second. Â Perhaps he is one of the alleged “new wrinkles” for this week Brown always saves and always fails to execute.
Question 3: What are you hearing as far as the new Athletic Director search?
Not much since the opening volley of information. It appears Oliver Luck of West Virginia is the front runner by default right now, with Louisville’s Tom Jurich a popular name, and the others with flaws such as TCU Athletic Director Chris Del Conte. The new AD needs to have some ties to the area, and must have a stronger business acumen than Dodds. My money is they go after Jurich, can’t match money since he is so highly paid already, and end up with Luck.
Question 4: Who will be the next football coach at Texas?
Keeping in mind we still don’t “officially” have an opening: The names which consistently come up in all the wild rumors floating around are Nick Saban, Will Muschamp, Charlie Strong, and Art Briles. Those guys are all well paid and in stronger positions than the coach at Texas has, so don’t be shocked if the next coach at UT is a name you didn’t expect. Of the listed four, I’d put the biggest money on Muschamp.
Question 5: Is there a scenario where Mack Brown returns next season?
Unfortunately yes that can still happen. It would involve at bare minimum a competitive loss to OU and nine total wins, coupled with Powers intentionally dragging his feet long enough to keep Brown at the helm until after National Signing Day. This is very unlikely scenario, but Bellmont has proven ANYTHING is possible at their little clown show. Rest assured, if for some reason Oklahoma doesn’t take care of things, Baylor will at the end of the year.
Question 6: Baylor has not played anyone. Are they for real?
Will Baylor score 70 a game the entire year? Of course they won’t, but yes they are 100% for real. They have Texas speed at every single spot and the depth to match. There is no down or distance they can not overcome, and they play so fast even on an off day where they only score TDs on half their possessions thats still 35-42 points. It’s going to take an exceptionally skilled secondary and a powerful grinding running game to keep it close, something no team in the Big 12 has.
Question 7: Who on the OU team concerns you the most?
Brennan Clay. The guy is an electric playmaker who can score from anywhere on the field at any time. We have a history of making people famous, and this kid could go for 250 total yards easily. They put Steve Edmond on the outside for this game. Now, all of you take that knowledge and watch the damage the Sooners RBs do in the flat.
Question 8: Do you think Texas fans are rooting for an OU win?
I think some are, and they should be ashamed. I am 130% for change, but I’m not going to be dancing in the streets if Stoops crushes Mack again. We are still Longhorns, and still deserve better.
Question 9: Everyone thinks OU is going to blow us out, but they don’t look that impressive to me.
More of a statement than a question, but I see what the asker was getting at. On paper, this is not one of Stoops better football teams. That said, the things they are good at are the things we are horrible at stopping, and this is one of Stoops better coaching jobs. Where our staff has failed to develop and elevate talent, theirs is getting the maximum out of their kids.
Question 10: How bad will the score be this weekend?
Its going to be a more competitive game than most think, but likely will get out of hand after the half. Im pretty comfortable with 41-17 Oklahoma.
