Follow along as our Devon Messinger jots down notes from the press box during Texas’ final non-conference match of the regular season against the UTSA Roadrunners.
First Quarter:
Well, that didn’t take long. On the first play of scrimmage, transfer linebacker Rasheem Biles came away with his second interception of the young season. Afterwards, Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning found Cam Coleman over the middle on a 24-yard touchdown pass. So much for Texas’ early struggles offensively.
As I mentioned earlier this week, UTSA running back Will Henderson III could be a problem for the Longhorns defensively, possessing game-changing speed in the backfield. While Texas was able to hold UTSA to a field goal, Henderson was able to break a pair of runs to the outside for first downs on his team’s second drive.
On Texas’ ensuing drive, the Longhorns drive was stalled by a personal foul penalty against offensive lineman Connor Robertson. Consequently, Texas kicker Gianni Spetic was able to connect on a 52-yard field goal to extend the team’s lead to 10-3.
Second Quarter:
This Cam Coleman guy is good at football. Already for the second time tonight, Coleman has found the end zone, this time on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Arch Manning. Last season, depth at the wide receiver position was an issue. However, after adding the big-time transfer target, the Longhorns arguably have one of the best receiving cores in the sport.
After a quick start to the game offensively, the Longhorns offense began to sputter in the second quarter. In back-to-back drives, the team was unable to find the scoreboard once again, giving UTSA the opportunity to make this a one score game. However, defensively, Will Muschamp’s group has done an excellent job of forcing Owen McCown to go under pressure at the quarterback position.
Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning has taken his fair share of hits so far tonight, most of which have been self-imposed. The Texas quarterback has to do a better job of protecting himself with so much on the line this season.
Third Quarter:
Talk about an ugly series of plays to start the second half of play. A botched snap and an illegal forward pass penalty snapped Texas’ first drive before it ever had a chance. As a result, the Roadrunners were set up in good field position following the Texas punt and added three points to the board via a field goal.
With 12:45 left in the third quarter, Texas’ lead is 20-6 over UTSA.
