The No. 8 Texas Longhorns (5-1, 2-1) are back in action today after having a bye-week to process what went wrong in the team’s narrow loss to Oklahoma. The Longhorns aren’t dwelling on the loss, but welcomed the extra week to work on red zone efficiency, communication and returning key players to “healthy” status. Texas will face a Houston Cougars (3-3, 1-2) team with a quarterback that beat them last season in transfer quarterback Donovan Smith (Texas Tech).
Smith ranks second in the Big 12 in touchdown passes, while Cougars wide receiver Samuel Brown leads the conference in receptions and receiving yards. Lightly put, while Texas looks much better on paper, Houston has playmakers and will likely pull out all the tricks on Saturday at TDECU Stadium. Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense is looking for an opportunity to right the ship following the Oklahoma game in which they gave up 486 yards of total offense which included more then 200 yards on the ground.
The meeting between the two marks the 26th in history and the first since 2002. The Longhorns hold an all-time record of 16-7-2 against the Cougars, including a 7-3-1 record when playing at Houston. Additionally, Texas has won its last three games there by a total of 77 points.
Kickoff comes at 3:00 PM at TDECU Stadium with Tim Brando and Spencer Tillman calling the game on FOX.
