Five-Star CB John Meredith III Commits to Texas, Gives Longhorns a Major Win in 2027 Class

The Texas Longhorns landed one of the biggest commitments in the nation as five-star cornerback John Meredith III announced his commitment to Texas, choosing the Longhorns over Texas A&M and Alabama.

Meredith III, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound defensive back, is widely regarded as the nation’s top cornerback in the 2027 recruiting class and is considered by many evaluators to be one of the top overall prospects in the country regardless of position. His pledge gives Texas another cornerstone piece in what is shaping up to be a loaded 2027 recruiting class.

For Steve Sarkisian and defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, landing Meredith was a major priority. Texas identified him early as one of the premier defensive prospects in the 2027 class and made him a focal point of its recruiting efforts. The Longhorns ultimately beat out Texas A&M and Alabama to secure a commitment from one of the nation’s most coveted recruits.

Meredith III has been one of the most dominant defensive players in high school football since stepping onto the field as a freshman. A four-year starter, he has consistently proven himself against top competition while displaying the traits that make him one of the most coveted defensive backs in the country.

His combination of size, length, athleticism, and instincts makes him a nightmare matchup for opposing offenses. Meredith III possesses outstanding footwork, fluid hips, and the ability to mirror receivers in coverage. He consistently stays in phase downfield, shows excellent ball skills at the catch point, and uses his length to disrupt passing lanes. Whether playing man coverage or operating in zone concepts, Meredith demonstrates the versatility and football IQ that college coaches covet at the position.

Beyond his physical tools, Meredith plays with confidence and competitiveness. He routinely challenges receivers at the line of scrimmage, attacks the football in the air, and has shown the ability to make game-changing plays throughout his high school career.

Texas views Meredith III as a player capable of making an early impact once he arrives in Austin. With his advanced skill set and college-ready frame, he has the talent to compete for playing time from day one and eventually develop into one of the premier defensive backs in the SEC.

The commitment represents another significant recruiting victory for the Longhorns, who continue to attract elite talent from across the country. Adding the nation’s No. 1 cornerback gives Texas a potential future lockdown defender and strengthens a 2027 class that is quickly becoming one of the best in the nation.

Meredith III was a key target for the Longhorns and a player the coaching staff viewed as a foundational piece of the class. His commitment gives Texas an elite defensive playmaker with the physical tools, instincts, and competitive mindset to become a difference-maker at the next level.

When all is said and done, Meredith III could be remembered as one of the foundational pieces of the Longhorns’ 2027 recruiting haul. For now, Texas has secured a commitment from arguably the nation’s top overall prospect and unquestionably one of the most talented defensive players in the country.
