Jerrod Heard officially visited Austin last weekend and frankly we were surprised that the 6-2, 185 lb. quarterback from Denton Guyer High School didn’t commit while on the trip. Horn Sports’ Chris Flanagan gave the guy all but a few hours of stepping foot on campus before he committed… Flanny was definitely right on track. Those expectations were fulfilled tonight when Heard became 2014 commit #5 as he verbally committed to play for the Texas Longhorns. Heard is arguably the state’s best prospect at the position and follows 2013 commit Tyrone Swoopes as yet another dual-threat quarterback Mack Brown adds to the future arsenal on offense. Heard’s commitment marks the third consecutive year the Longhorns have received a commitment from a highly touted dual-threat quarterback (Jalen Overstreet – 2012, Tyrone Swoopes – 2013, and Heard – 2014). Is Mack Brown experiencing a bit of VY nostalgia? Quite possibly. Can you blame him? Hardly.
Heard holds offers from LSU, Nebraska, Ohio State, Baylor, Arizona State and Arizona but felt the Longhorns were the best team suited to utilize his talents. Why Texas? According to Heard:
Heard passed for nearly 2300 yards last year at Guyer and threw roughly a 3:1 touchdown to interception ratio as a sophmore. Look for bigger things from a more confident and developed Heard this season at Guyer. The Longhorns secured a commitment from an accurate, mobile and intelligent young quarterback this evening. Expect BIG things from Jerrod Heard in the upcoming years.
