Texas quarterback David Ash has been cleared by the team’s medical staff and will start against the Kansas State Wildcats in the conference opener for both schools. Â Ash sustained head and shoulder injuries in the team’s loss against BYU in Provo and did not play in the Ole Miss game. Â Senior quarterback Case McCoy started at quarterback against the Rebels and played the entire game in the Longhorns 44-23 loss.
Ash has thrown for 594 yards and 6 touchdowns with 2 interceptions in 2 games played. Â Case McCoy will serve as the backup against Kansas State who has beaten the Longhorns 5 straight times. Â Freshman quarterback Tyrone Swoopes fills the 3rd spot on the depth chart at the position.
The odds of Texas being competitive in this game have increased substantially with the news that Ash will play. Â Case McCoy went 24-36 for 196 yards and 1 touchdown against Ole Miss last weekend.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin and will be televised on ABC. Â Brent Musberger and Kirk Herbstreit will call the game.
