On Saturday, the Longhorns take on the Sooners at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas, TX. After two rivalry wins in-a-row over Oklahoma, the Longhorns enter this weekend as the nation’s top-ranked team. Meanwhile, Brent Venables’ Oklahoma team faces an uphill battle on the season already as they enter this year’s matchup at 2-2.
Saturday’s X-Factors:
John Mateer
First, look at Oklahoma’s quarterback. Last year, John Mateer threw three interceptions against Texas after returning from an injury. He has continued to struggle in big games this season, including losses to Michigan and Oklahoma. The Sooners also lack the offensive depth they once had. As a result, Mateer carries much of the burden. He must protect the ball and avoid costly turnovers to give Oklahoma a legitimate chance.
The Longhorns’ Defensive Front
Texas’ defensive front will also play a key role on Saturday. Against Tennessee, the unit recorded an impressive 10 sacks. Given Oklahoma’s offensive struggles, the Sooners could face major problems if they cannot contain the pass rush. Colin Simmons is coming off a 5.5-sack performance. If he adds even two sacks against Oklahoma, the Longhorns could deliver another dominant defensive showing.
Arch Manning
Finally, as seems to be the case every week, Arch Manning is a key X-factor. Texas has managed to get by offensively but has yet to dominate consistently. If the Longhorns want to reach another level, Manning must lead the way.
His physical tools are not in question. Instead, consistency remains the biggest concern. In last year’s matchup against Oklahoma, Manning did not need to do much. He threw for 166 yards and a touchdown while completing nearly 78% of his passes.
Manning does not need to play hero ball. He simply needs to deliver a consistent performance.
