Austin – Playing yet another game without sophmore point guard Myck Kabongo, the Texas basketball team improved to 4-2 after beating a poor shooting Sam Houston State team at the Frank Erwin Center on Tuesday. The Bearkats shot just 21% from the floor and 21.4% from the free throw line, which essentially doomed head coach Jason Hooten’s squad. Troubling yet again for Rick Barnes and this young team were the turnovers, which seem to be plentiful these days, including 19 committed against Sam Houston State. Of the starting 5 for the Longhorns, forward Jonathan Holmes scored 11 points and had 8 rebounds while guard Julien Lewis contributed 10 points in the win. Coming off the bench again tonight to lead all scorers was Texas guard Sheldon McClellan who turned in 16 points and 8 rebounds. Texas out-rebounded Sam Houston State 44-29 and shot 73.7% from the free throw stripe. Paul Baxter led the Bearkats in scoring with 12 points.
Texas takes the court again next on Saturday, December 1st against UT-Arlington at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.
