Texas may not get its Michigan return game after all

A contract amendment obtained by FBSchedules.com through a public records request moved Eastern Michigan to Sept. 11, 2027 — the same day the Wolverines owe Texas a trip to Austin. The cancellation clause runs $2 million.

The clearest signal that a marquee nonconference game may be in trouble rarely comes from a press release. Sometimes it arrives as an amendment buried in a public records request.

FBSchedules.com, citing an amended contract obtained from Eastern Michigan through a state public records request, reported that Michigan and Eastern Michigan moved their 2027 meeting up one week, from Sept. 18 to Sept. 11, with Michigan adding $50,000 to push the Eagles’ total guarantee to $1.55 million.

Sept. 11, 2027 is also the date Michigan is supposed to be in Austin.

The overlap leaves the second half of a long-planned Michigan-Texas home-and-home series without a clear place to be played. Neither school has announced a cancellation, and the game could still be shifted to another weekend. But the contract carries a $2 million penalty unless both programs agree to walk away together, and Michigan has quietly committed itself to a directional-school opponent on a date it already owed to one of the sport’s premier venues. Nobody in Ann Arbor or Austin has explained which game gives.

Two games, one Saturday

The Wolverines and Longhorns agreed years ago to a home-and-home series, then reshuffled it as Texas negotiated its early exit from the Big 12. The final arrangement sent Texas to Ann Arbor on Sept. 7, 2024, and Michigan to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Sept. 11, 2027. Michigan’s official future schedule page still lists the Texas trip on that date, with Eastern Michigan a week later.

Eastern Michigan’s own home game against Mercyhurst was scheduled for Sept. 11 as well and is now expected to move, possibly to a season opener on Aug. 28.

The $2 million question

The structure of that cancellation clause matters. A mutual handshake costs nothing. A unilateral walk-away costs $2 million. Which means the outcome depends less on what Michigan wants than on whether Texas is willing to let it go.

There are less dramatic explanations. College football’s 2027 calendar is shifting, and schedule watchers have suggested the Texas game could simply slide to a different week rather than disappear. Texas also has flexibility, if it wants to spend some money: the Longhorns have New Mexico State on Sept. 4 and UTEP on Sept. 18 in 2027. Each of those games could be rescheduled for a fee.

Still, the incentives are worth noting. Michigan’s 2027 Big Ten slate already includes Ohio State and Oregon at home plus road trips to Penn State, UCLA, Michigan State, Indiana and Iowa. In a college football playoff era that rewards résumé strength but punishes losses, subtracting a road game at a top-10 program is not obviously a bad outcome for the Michigan program.

Texas has its own math. Steve Sarkisian said last season that the Longhorns would honor the Ohio State and Michigan return games but that everything after that was open for review. This includes the Notre Dame series that is scheduled for the 2028-2029 seasons.

“I think anything beyond (Ohio State and Michigan) is up for discussion. (Chris Del Conte) and I have already had that discussion, we need to take a good, hard look at what our non-conference schedule looks like beyond the next two years.” –Steve Sarkisian, Texas head coach

Michigan is still chasing a first win against Texas

Whatever happens, the Wolverines remain 0-3 against Texas. The Longhorns won 31-12 at the Big House in 2024, then closed the 2025 season with a 41-27 Citrus Bowl win in Orlando behind Arch Manning.

A cancellation would leave that ledger untouched. It would also cost both schools a rare sellout-caliber September matchup between two of the sport’s winningest programs.

For now, the only firm fact is a signed amendment involving a different opponent. Everything else is a date conflict waiting on an answer.
