Hollywood Smothers made an immediate impact in his Texas debut, rushing for 70 yards, adding 28 receiving yards and scoring a touchdown. Now, the Longhorns will need another big performance from the dynamic back when top-ranked Ohio State visits Austin on Saturday.
At 5-foot-11 and 196 pounds, Smothers pairs game-breaking speed with the strength to run between the tackles and absorb contact. He gets north quickly, runs with purpose and has the explosiveness to turn a small opening into a big gain.
Smothers is just as dangerous in the passing game. His reliable hands and open-field shiftiness make him a valuable target for Arch Manning, particularly on checkdowns and designed plays out of the backfield. He can serve as Manning’s safety valve while still possessing the ability to create an explosive play after the catch.
That versatility is why Texas pursued Smothers in the transfer portal. The Longhorns wanted another running back who could create splash plays and affect the game in multiple ways.
Alongside Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo and Raleek Brown, Smothers gives Texas another featured offensive weapon. Against Ohio State’s talented defense, his ability to run with power, contribute as a receiver and find the end zone could be crucial.
