The Basics

‘”

    n”.self::process_list_items(“‘.str_replace(‘

    ‘, ”, ‘

    [*]24th ranked Connecticut won the 2014 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship with a win over the Kentucky Wildcats.

    [*]Texas and UCONN have met 7 times prior to Sunday’s game, with the Huskies holding a 5-2 lead over the Longhorns.

    [*]The first time the two schools met was in 1991, when then Texas basketball coach Tom Penders lost to Jim Calhoun’s Huskies 94-77 in Austin.

    [*]The last meeting between the two teams was in 2011 and the Huskies beat the Longhorns 82-81 in OT in Austin.

    [*]Rick Barnes has had success against UCONN teams as a head coach, winning 8-11 games all-time against the Huskies. Barnes was 6-8 against UCONN as head coach of the Providence Friars (and is 2-3 as Texas head coach).

    [*]UCONN’s only loss on the season came at the hands of a then unranked West Virginia team in Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Tipoff Tournament)

Scouting Report

‘”

    n”.self::process_list_items(“‘.str_replace(‘

    ‘, ”, ‘

    [*]Texas fans need to remember the name Ryan Boatright. UCONN lost star guard Shabazz Napier after winning last year’s national championship and Boatright has picked right up where Shabazz left off. Boatright leads the Huskies with 20 points per game.

    [*]Sophmore guard Rodney Purvis has tons of talent and averages 9.3 points per game. Purvis injured his ankle in the loss to West Virginia but is expected to play against the Longhorns.

    [*]6-8 freshman Rakim Lubin saw decent minutes in the first three games for the Huskies. Lubin was reinstated by head coach Kevin Ollie yesterday after being suspended for breaking team rules in Puerto Rico. Lubin will likely see meaningful minutes against the Longhorns tomorrow, particularly due to the size advantage Texas has over the Huskies.

    [*]7-foot center Amida Brimah averages 9.5 PPG and 4 rebounds per game. The Longhorns will need to contain the big man to be successful. Brimah is 3rd in scoring for the Huskies on the season.

    [*]UCONN freshman guard/forward Daniel Hamilton is efficient for the Huskies, averaging 13.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. Hamilton dumped in 15 and grabbed 9 rebounds against the Mountaineers in the loss.

    [*]Sophmore forward Kenton Facey leads the Huskies in rebounds (averaging 7 per game). He’s 6-9 and 206 lbs. and has a decent shot.

    [*]Sam Cassell Jr. (son of former NBA star Sam Cassell) is a redshirt sophmore at UCONN. Head Coach Kevin Ollie played with Sam Cassell Sr. for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Cassell will see playing time against Texas and has the capacity to be a quick scorer, particularly off the screen.
