Longhorns Recruiting Road Trip: Week 14

Last weekend, I travelled to San Antonio’s Alamodome to once again to check out the DeSoto Eagles, led by 2023 four-star wide receiver Johntay Cook II and a plethora of other talent. On Saturday, No. 21 DeSoto was set to face a sizable challenger in No. 6 Spring Westfield. In addition to this matchup, I also covered No. 5 Rockwall-Heath’s matchup against Tomball at the Alamodome as well.

Playoffs Round 3:

DeSoto

  • Johntay Cook II & Mike Murphy: Against Spring Westfield, Cook proved to be lightning in a bottle as he scorched the Mustangs defense with 103 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns on just three receptions. Like Cook, Mike Murphy, a senior wideout for the Eagles, also made a splash in last Saturday’s contest with 128 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. This season, Murphy is quietly approaching the thousand-yard receiving mark, currently having tallied 905 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns on the season.
  • Chris Henley Jr.: Once again, Henley continued to produce sizable gains on the ground for DeSoto. In Saturday’s contest, Henley added another 139 rushing yards and a touchdown to his season stats.
  • Elijah Shaw: Continuing DeSoto’s dominance in the secondary, the senior cornerback was on the receiving end of, not one, but two interceptions on Saturday. Thanks to Shaw’s efforts, and the dominance of the Eagles defense as a whole, DeSoto was able to soar their way to a 34-17 playoff victory.

Rockwall-Heath:

  • Zach Evans: The 2022 three-star running back rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s game, with his longest carry being a 73-yard touchdown run. The Minnesota pledge absolutely lit up the scoreboard during his senior season, accounting for 1,957 rushing yards and 26 rushing touchdowns.
  • Jordan Nabors: Like Evans, Nabors found a way to produce by totaling 97 receiving yards and a touchdown against Tomball. Over the last two years, Nabors has been an intriguing wide receiver recruit who is currently committed to joining Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears.
  • The Bad: Unfortunately for the Heath Hawks, Tomball senior quarterback Cale Hellums looked like the resurrection of Tim Tebow as he rushed for 317 yards and 3 touchdowns in Tomball’s massive 35-21 upset victory.
