Live Notes from No. 1 Texas vs No. 14 Tennessee

Follow along as our Devon Messinger jots down notes from the press box during Texas’ first SEC matchup of the year against the Tennessee Volunteers.

First Quarter

What a start for the Longhorns. On the team’s first drive, Arch Manning found Emmett Mosley for a big 43-yard gain, later followed by a 9-yard touchdown rush by Raleek Brown.

On Texas’ first drive on defense, the Longhorns suffered two major penalties: a roughing on the passer on Lance Jackson and pass interference on Bo Mascoe. Despite of the penalties, the Longhorns defense was able to hold Tennessee to a field goal.

It is clear that halftime adjustments are needed for the Texas offensive line. The team has already allowed several pressures, and has not been able to create a push in the run game as well.

Second Quarter

Early in the second quarter, the Volunteers are forced to bring in their backup quarterback after starter Faizon Brandon suffered an injury. Obviously, this injury could have a real impact one today’s game.

With backup quarterback George MacIntyre in the game, the Texas defensive front has dialed up the pressure.

For Texas, Arch Manning has had a solid day overall but had a bad second quarter interception on a throw intended for Cam Coleman. The transfer was double covered down the middle and made an attempt at the football but was unable to steal it from the Tennessee defensive back.

Third Quarter

Well, the second half has gotten off to a poor start for the Longhorns. On Texas’ first drive, the Longhorns stalled following a sack of Arch Manning on third down. On the punt, Texas allowed a 57-yard touchdown return which tied things up at 10-10.

The third quarter was an ugly one for the Texas offense. Nothing was working, and Arch Manning suffered a few sacks. They haven’t looked like the top-ranked team in the country today, yet, the defense has kept things close.
