A rumor is swirling that former 5-star recruit and current Longhorn Sophomore RB Malcolm Brown is wanting to transfer from Texas, possibly to Texas A&M. Surprisingly enough, I have not seen enough of the Texas fanbase expressing a desire for Brown to remain a Longhorn as I thought I would.

Brown hasn’t been on the injury report in a while, but hasn’t seen the playing time Joe Bergeron and Jonathan Gray have, working the RB spot with assists from speedster freshman Daje Johnson. Leave no doubt, Malcolm Brown is a great RB, and seemed to have it all coming together for him in camp. Brown is easily a three down RB and would be getting the majority of the carries at many FBS programs.

That said, many programs don’t have the depth the Longhorns do at the position.  Bergeron, Gray, Monroe, Johnson, and Hills are all guys with the talent to one day play on Sundays in some capacity. If you can’t stay on the field there are guys in this group that will take your place at the table and injuries have dogged Brown during his Texas tenure.

The drive and determination it takes to be a 5-star RB means you believe in your heart no one can do what you can do. I can imagine it being a bit rough for Brown to watch other guys getting the playing time. I can also imagine what that does to the mind when you look around at the other programs that recruited you playing for big things while you are a part of the “rebuilding” program at Texas (or whatever we’re calling our program’s state these days). Don’t think for a second Brown couldn’t be carrying the rock for Alabama this weekend.

I’m not saying this rumor has no legs, but I’ve heard nothing about it from sources inside the program. So don’t throw the kid out until you have a reason to, and honestly, don’t throw him out at all. Young men transfer all the time, and these guys have a right to be happy whether you like it or not.

If this rumor has legs and he does want to transfer, Texas would be ignorant to give him a totally free release. The transfer can not be to an in-conference or in-state university.  Live your dream by all means, but don’t expect Texas to help out an opposing school with the gift of a proven runner.
