For Texas fans thinking they would get a reprieve from the recruiting barrage that went down yesterday at the hands of the Longhorns… think again. This morning Texas picked up 2014 commit #3, Donald “Duke†Catalon, a 6’0†190 lb. running back from Houston Eisenhower High School. As a freshman Catalon saw limited playing time but rushed for 1,148 on 165 carries including 6 touchdowns in his sophomore campaign at Eisenhower. Catalon had already received offers from Texas Tech and SMU.
Catalon joins WR Lorenzo Joe (Abilene Cooper) and Derick Roberson (Brennan – San Antonio) as players to commit within a day of receiving one of the many offers extended by the Texas coaching staff yesterday. Catalon’s recruitment is particularly critical because of the “what would be†timing of his matriculation at the University of Texas.  The 2014 season would see both Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown as seniors at UT, assuming one or both have not left early for the NFL. Additionally, not to put the cart before the horse, but Johnathan Gray will be a junior and could very well consider taking advantage of an opportunity in the NFL after the season is over. The lone running back commit in the ’13 class is Kyle Hicks, which makes the Catalon offer and commitment paramount.
Texas has also offered scholarships to fullback Daniel Gresham (Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal) and running back Nathan Starks (Las Vegas Bishop Gorman) so expect the backfield to grow as the 2014 class officially expands.
