News broke this morning per ESPN that Georgia Tech is set to hire Texas safeties coach Blake Gideon as its new defensive coordinator, replacing Tyler Santucci, who departed for the Baltimore Ravens to coach linebackers in the NFL.
Gideon has been coaching safeties at Texas since 2021, playing a key role in the Longhorns’ success, including a Big 12 title in 2023, back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances, and an SEC Championship Game berth this past season. As a player, he was a four-year starter at Texas, making 52 starts at safety.
He’s no stranger to the Atlanta area, having coached cornerbacks at Georgia State in 2018. He also has experience coaching special teams and safeties at Houston (2019) and special teams at Ole Miss (2020) before joining Texas. Beyond his on-field coaching ability, Gideon is regarded as an elite recruiter, helping Texas land top defensive backs in its last two recruiting classes.
His hiring is a major win for the Yellow Jackets as they look to elevate their defensive unit under head coach Brent Key.
