The No. 6/5 Texas women’s basketball team hosts No. 20/24 Oklahoma State tonight at the Frank Erwin Center.
The Cowgirls own an 8-3 record in Big 12 play and an 18-4 overall record. They are on a six-game winning streak with most recently beating Texas Tech 70-57 on Sunday.
The Longhorns possess a 10-1 Big 12 record and a 21-1 record overall. Texas’ only loss came against Baylor on Jan. 17. The Horns are on a five-game winning streak, beating their last opponent, Iowa State, 65-49 on Saturday.
Texas, as a team, averages 73.5 points per game, ranking second in the Big 12. Oklahoma State ranks seventh, averaging 69 points.
The Longhorns’ senior center Imani Boyette scores an average of 12.8 points per game, leading Texas. Sophomore guard Brooke McCarty also averages double-digit in scoring with 11.2 points per game. Sophomore guard Ariel Atkins is coming off a hot hand against the Cyclones. Atkins scored 22 points, notching a career high. The guard averages 10.2 points per game.
Oklahoma State’s senior Brittney Martin leads the Cowgirls in scoring, averaging 21.6 points per game. That ranks her first in the Big 12 and No. 12 in the nation. Against Texas Tech, Martin scored 32. The Cyclones’ sophomore Kaylee Jensen averages 15.5 points per game, ranking her sixth in the Big 12.
The Longhorns own the second-best scoring defense in the Big 12, giving up an average of 54 points per game. Oklahoma State ranks just behind the Longhorns in third place, allowing 55.8 points per game.
The Cowgirls also sit right behind Texas in rebounding on offense and defense. Oklahoma State’s Martin averages 11.1 boards a game, ranking her first in the conference. Texas’ Boyette grabs an average of 9.9 boards, putting her second in the Big 12. Tonight’s game should be a competitive defensive battle down low for Martin and Boyette.
The last time these two schools faced each other was Jan. 9 in Stillwater, and Texas won 78-48. The Longhorns held Oklahoma State to a 27.8 shooting percentage. Texas recorded a 52.9 shooting percentage. Boyette scored 12 points while Martin led the game with 17. Twelve Longhorns contributed to their scoring efforts that night, and only eight Cowgirls recorded points.
Tonight’s game marks the 44th meeting between Texas and Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on Longhorn Network.
