Today marks the first time since 1958 that the Georgia Bulldogs (5-1, 1-1 SEC) will face the Texas Longhorns (6-0, 2-0 SEC) in Austin. The Bulldogs have won two national championships in the last three seasons, making Kirby Smart’s team the standard in college football. The matchup between these two football powerhouses will feature the ESPN GameDay crew along with a sold out Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium under the lights. Austin is the center of the universe this weekend and for good reason.
Georgia opened the season ranked No. 1 in both the Associated Press and Coaches Polls. Following their 41-34 loss to Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Georgia reeled off wins against Auburn and Mississippi State. Texas holds an undefeated record which includes SEC wins against Mississippi State and Oklahoma.
A win over Georgia would put the Bulldogs in a precarious position relative to making the College Football Playoff. A loss for Texas, conversely, wouldn’t preclude the Longhorns from an appearance. Steve Sarkisian’s team is playing solid football on both sides of the ball and hope to end Saturday with their third conference win and an undefeated record after seven games.
