Texas picked up another key portal piece Tuesday morning with the announcement of former Arizona DT Tiaoalii Savea joining the program.
Savea registered 6.5 TFL’s and 1.5 sacks in 2023 under Arizona Defensive Coordinator Johnny Nansen, who joined Texas earlier this month as the new co-DC/LB coach. Before joining Arizona, the former 4-star recruit also played under Nansen at UCLA in 2021.
The Longhorns hope Savea carves out a role in the DT rotation following the departures of Byron Murphy and T’Vondre Sweat to the NFL, along with Trill Carter transferring to Auburn.
Savea, a 6-4, 305 lb. native of Las Vegas, was a four-star prospect out of high school (2021) and was ranked as the third best player in the state of Nevada according to the 247Sports Composite Player Rankings. He held offers from schools such as LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan, Arkansas, Florida State, Florida and Oregon among others before committing to the Bruins.
