University of Texas safety Caden Sterns was honored as the Jim Thorpe Award Player of the Week following his performance against Texas Christian University last Saturday. Sterns, a true freshman, had two interceptions and five tackles in the Longhorns’ 31-16 win over the Horned Frogs. He has totaled three interceptions through four games and becomes the third Texas player to have two interceptions in a game (DeShon Elliott – 2015 , Chris Carter – 1993).
The record for interceptions in a season by a true freshman at Texas is four, a feat accomplished by Quandre Diggs in 2011 and Chris Carter in 1993.
The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award annually recognizes the best defensive back in college football and will be awarded on December 6, 2018 at the Home Depot College Football Awards presentation.
Stern’s teammate and senior defensive back Kris Boyd was named as to the Thorpe award Preseason Watchlist.
