A day after DIBaseball named University of Texas freshman pitcher Dylan Volantis a consensus All-American, another distinct honor was placed on the former Westlake High School product.
Texas Longhorns closer Dylan Volantis has been named the National Freshman of the Year, as announced by Baseball America on Friday morning.
Volantis becomes only the fourth Longhorn in history to receive this prestigious honor, joining the ranks of Greg Swindell (1984), Kirk Dressendorfer (1988), and Brooks Kieschnick (1991).
A consensus All-American, Volantis led all freshmen nationally with a WHIP of 0.88 and 12 saves. He also ranked second in ERA (1.94) and opponent batting average (.185).
The 6-foot-6, 212-pound left-hander recorded 74 strikeouts and issued just 12 walks over 51 innings.
Among all Division I pitchers, Volantis tied for 10th in saves. His 11 saves in conference play set a new record for SEC freshmen.
In league play, the SEC Freshman of the Year led all pitchers in ERA (1.59), WHIP (0.85), opponent batting average (.160), and saves (11).
