That’s a Wrap

http://www.bevoball.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Aggies-Longhorns-300×276.jpgOn Thanksgiving night we saw the dramatic and exciting end to one of college football’s greatest rivalries.   After taking a few days to let the magnitude of the end hit me, I have come to a realization.  I am going to miss Texas and Texas A&M every Thanksgiving.  Was it pride, money, jealousy, or even honor that ended the series?  I think maybe it was all of these things and more.  The sad part is the schools never took into consideration the fans, the magnitude of the series and what it really meant to both schools. Yes, I think the Aggies are dumber than dirt for thinking they have a chance at winning in the SEC.  But I think the administration can be blamed for letting their pride, ego, self esteem and jealousy of The University of Texas stand in the way of the rivalry.  As I’ve heard so many times, “they are cutting off their own nose to spite their face”.

Most fans I have spoken with on both sides have voiced the opinion they don’t want to see this come to an end.  It is a shame to see so much history flushed down the toilet over petty issues.  But there are a small percentage of the fan bases that will be happy about it ending.  Yes, the Aggies have been the Longhorns little tag along for the better part of the 119 year rivalry, but then it was their choice to be an Aggie anyway. If they really think the move to the SEC will change their winning ways, they are living in the “Twilight Zone”.   As my mom used to say, “They are stepping out of the frying pan and into the fire.”

As a lifelong fan of the Longhorns, it has become a Thanksgiving weekend tradition to watch the Horns beat up on the Aggies.  I am sad this year will be the last time I will see Aggie fans crying about another loss  to Texas.  I suspect at some point we will see talks about continuing this series, but for now we can always hang over their heads we won the final game on their home field.

It is said that “All good things must come to an end”. If this was the final ending of the “Lone Star Showdown”, then we all witnessed a great ending and the Longhorn faithful can brag about it forever. But I for one would like to see this continue.  Why? Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without seeing our beloved Horns beating the Aggies.
