The Texas women’s basketball team joined an exclusive club Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center.
The Longhorns earned their 1,000th program victory. Only four other schools own 1,000 program wins: Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, James Madison and Old Dominion.
“It just kind of humbles you,†senior center Imani Boyette said about the 1,000th program win. “You see how blessed you are to be in such a historic program. So for us to be considered good enough to play here and represent Texas, it’s just amazing.â€
Former Texas head coach Jody Conradt owns the most wins with 783. She coached at UT for 31 years, 1976-2007. Conradt owns one national championship at Texas – she coached the 1985-86 team to a perfect 34-0 record. That Texas team was the first NCAA women’s basketball team to finish a season undefeated. Conradt became the second woman inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1998.
Texas’ first head coach Rod Page led the Longhorns to 38 victories from 1974-1976. Conradt came after Page. Gail Goestenkors followed Conradt, and she recorded 102 wins in 5 seasons. Goestenkors led the Longhorns to five-straight NCAA Tournaments before retiring in 2012. Karen Aston took over the head coaching duties after Goestenkors. Aston spent eight years coaching under Conradt. Currently, Aston owns 77 career wins at Texas, including the special 1,000th program victory against Kansas.
The Longhorns beat the Jayhawks 70-46.
Boyette recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Guard Brooke McCarty finished with 13 points, including three 3-pointers in the first quarter. Every Texas player recorded minutes on the floor in the 1,000th program victory.
Up next for the Longhorns is Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas, on Saturday. The Wildcats own a 14-15 overall record and a 4-4 record in Big 12 play. Kansas State is currently on a four-game winning streak after dropping its first four conference games.
