After losing a close game in Fort Worth earlier in January, the Longhorns were focused on ensuring the Horned Frogs didn’t leave Austin with another conference win on Tuesday evening at the Frank Erwin Center..
TCU scored the first points of the game but that proved to be the only time the Horned Frogs ever led the Longhorns in the game. Texas grabbed their 5th win in Big 12 play with a 71-54 victory at home on Tuesday night. After starting 1-2 in Big 12 play, with losses to Texas Tech and TCU, the Longhorns are 4-1 against conference opponents with wins over ranked Iowa State and West Virginia teams.
*Star of the Game: Prince Ibeh*
In Cam Ridley’s absence due to injury, Prince Ibeh has progressively become a key contributor to the team’s success. Ibeh’s 17 points and 10 rebounds against TCU were essential in the win over the Horned Frogs – especially since Texas didn’t get the expected production out of the team’s leading scorer Isaiah Taylor.
*Key moment in the game*
After the half, TCU cut the lead to 6 points and the Longhorns were struggling to hit a shot. Javan Felix hit a 3 pointer just before the first TV timeout. After that, Texas started to extend the lead and was able to keep the Horned Frogs far enough away that they were never a threat.
*Epilogue*
In the Big 12 there are the “haves” and the “have nots”. Texas is one of 6 teams who are in the “haves” department, boasting a 5-3 record. There is a log-jam at the top but the 7th place team is 2-5 (likely 2-6 after Oklahoma State plays Baylor tomorrow). There is going to be separation between 1-6 after this weekend that will dictate seeding and potentially a Big 12 championship for the Texas Longhorns.
Texas will play Vanderbilt in the Big 12/SEC showdown on Saturday.
