It is Labor Day and as Mack put it to open his Monday meeting with the media “you get time and a half.”  Overtime was not needed as Coach Brown talked only for about a 20 minutes on the Wyoming game and what his thoughts are on facing Bob Davie’s New Mexico Lobos this Saturday in Austin.  The week two depth chart was released and had only a few shifts which include Desmond Jackson showing up as the starting defensive tackle and Daje Johnson showing back up on the chart after sitting the Wyoming game out for violation of team rules.  Jackson has apparently beat out JUCO transfer Brandon Moore at DT for the time being (depth chart below).

Essential Nuggets from Mack’s Presser:

  • David Ash needs to improve on the deep ball throws.  The center-quarterback exchange needs to be worked on (Mack referenced the Ash fumbled snap) and as we know, the passing game needs to connect with the receivers on more deep throws.
  •

  • Mason Walters was praised as the best player on the offensive line, while Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron were named most valuable players on offense.
  •

  • Carrington Byndum received the “Hard Hat” Award for biggest hit while defenive players of the game were Alex Okafor and Jackson Jeffcoat.
  •

  • Nick Jordan and Nick Rose will compete for the starting job against New Mexico as Anthony Fera is doubtful again this week against the Lobos.
  •

  • 12 true freshmen played against Wyoming and more will play this week against New Mexico (Daje Johnson will be one of these).
  •

  • Earl Campbell will be the honorary captain this week.
  •

  • Mack thinks the defensive has a lot of work to do, expecially when conference play starts (he referenced the huge offensive numbers teams like West Virginia, Oklahoma State & Baylor put up in week 1).  Says he had concerns about it in the preseason.
  •

With Daje Johnson back on the depth chart Longhorn fans can expect to see a variety of packages that highlight the true freshman’s speed and velcro-like hands.  It is also safe to assume that David Ash will be throwing more deep balls against favorable matchups in the New Mexico secondary.
