The Longhorns own the historical edge in their long-time rivalry with the TCU Horned Frogs but on Saturday, history was pushed aside by the realities of today. TCU (5-0) is ranked 4th in the country and showcased a dynamic spread offense and an improved defense in the team’s 45-17 victory over Texas. Heisman Trophy candidate Trevone Boykin finished with 332 yards passing and five touchdowns and 52 yards rushing on seven carries. The Longhorns (1-4) are a struggling team looking to simply show progress from week-to-week.
Today Texas looked like a team without an identity on either side of the ball.
Special teams miscues haunted the Longhorns again as Nick Rose went 0-2 in field goal attempts, while a bad punt snap resulted in a safety early in the first quarter.
Texas forced TCU to three-and-out on the opening drive of the game but on the Longhorns’ second offensive play from scrimmage, wide receiver Daje Johnson fumbled after being hit by TCU. The Horned Frogs recovered and capitalized. Four plays and 45 yards later Trevone Boykin would find KaVontae Turpin for the first touchdown of the game.
On the next Texas possession snapper Kyle Ashby launched a punt snap over the head of kicker Michael Dickson resulting in a safety. TCU led 9-0 at that point and on the ensuing kickoff Nick Rose kicked the ball out of bounds giving the Horned Frogs the ball at the 50-yard line. The drive would be capped off by Josh Doctson out-leaping Texas defensive back Holton Hill for the ball and a touchdown.
Boykin added two more touchdown passes to Turpin and Doctson, respectively, and the Horned Frogs led 30-0 after one quarter of play.
KaVontae Turpin’s touchdown reception from Trevone Boykin with :48 left in the second quarter would account for the only scoring in the quarter.
Texas would hit the locker room down 37-0 at the half.
The Longhorns didn’t fare much better in the second half although they did manage to avoid getting shutout by Gary Patterson’s team.
TCU’s KaVontae Turpin picked right where he left off, hauling in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Trevone Boykin at the 12:14 mark in the third quarter. Jaden Oberkrom added a 23-yard TCU field goal just before the quarter ended to give the Horned Frogs a 47-0 lead.
Oberkrom would hit again, this time nailing a 41-yard field goal with 11:31 left in the fourth quarter.
TCU led Texas by a half a century at that point.
The Longhorns would avoid a shutout and the worst loss to the Horned Frogs in the history of the series when Tyrone Swoopes found Lorenzo Joe with 5:14 left in the game.
When the game clock expired TCU won its second-straight against the Longhorns by the score of 50-7.
The Longhorns will face the Oklahoma Sooners next week at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas for the Red River Showdown.
