The Texas Longhorns had their first scrimmage over the weekend, offering a crucial opportunity for players on the two-deep chart to showcase their readiness for the upcoming season. This scrimmage also provided the coaching staff with a chance to identify who they can rely on as the season approaches.

The defense set the tone early during the live tackling period, particularly with the defensive line dominating the line of scrimmage. Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton started with the first team and held their own by stuffing the running game. Aaron Bryant and true freshman Alex January contributed with the second team. Louisville transfer Jermayne Lole made his presence felt inside, disrupting the offense’s rhythm. Justice Finkley stood out with a sack and Trey Moore, a transfer from UTSA, applied consistent pressure on the quarterback with the second team. Safety Andrew Mukuba made a significant impact by intercepting Arch Manning in the red zone, turning the momentum back to the defense. Jelani McDonald also intercepted Manning, highlighting the safety position’s strong performance. Jahdae Barron who had several reps at cornerback, contributed a key red zone play by forcing a fumble with a well-executed open-field tackle. Malik Muhammad played well and is poised for a breakout season Linebackers Anthony Hill Jr., Liona Lefau, and Ty’Anthony Smith were active against the run, making crucial stops. Lefau also shined in pass coverage, breaking up several attempts. Overall, the defense’s performance in the scrimmage was a promising sign, with multiple players stepping up and making plays. This strong showing will be key as the Longhorns continue to prepare for the season ahead.
