Freshman running back Christian Clark, a promising talent from Phoenix, AZ, suffered a significant setback during Texas’s most recent practice, as he went down in a non-contact drill while going up to catch a pass. This injury comes on the heels of another devastating blow to the backfield, with CJ Baxter already sidelined for the season due to a knee injury. With these two key players out, Texas finds itself in a tough position, now relying on just three healthy running backs: Jaydon Blue, Tre Wisner, and Jerrick Gibson.
In light of the dwindling depth, the coaching staff has been forced to make adjustments. During the recent scrimmage, second-year linebacker Derion Gullette was called upon to take snaps on the offensive side of the ball at running back. Gullette showed versatility by stepping into this critical role. His involvement on offense may become increasingly important as the season progresses. The Longhorns will need to rely heavily on the remaining healthy players and hope for a swift recovery for Clark.
UPDATE (8/13 – 5:20 PM) Per an announcement from UT, Clark suffered a torn Achilles tendon and will undergo surgery. He will miss the upcoming football season.
