Horns Up! Undefeated Teams Should Go Ahead Of 1 Loss Teams

I wanted to utilize this week’s Horns Up! post to address the  BCS… or what’s left of it..

Thank GOD the BCS is dead after this year.  The 2013 season puts an end to a 15-year reign to the Bowl Championship Series and all the joy, anger and sorrow it brought college football fans. Yeah, it’s done soon, but what good is a bowl system shelf-life without a little final controversy? Auburn won on a dramatic missed field goal attempt return for a touchdown to end a whopping 15-game winning streak for Alabama. Texas fans know all about dramatic last second plays that dash hopes for national championship appearances… So for me, it was tragic that the greatest dynasty since the mid-90’s (Nebraska Cornhuskers) most likely ended on that play.

And now the apparent….  There are 2 undefeated BCS conference teams left – Florida State and Ohio State. The SEC machine is now in full spin mode to vault either Auburn or Missouri into the BCS championship game. As a Mizzou alum, I can say that it would be beneficial for the Tigers to receive as much SEC bias as possible to have a shot at getting into the National Championship game.  However I will stick to my principles on this one.  An undefeated BCS Conference affiliated team should play in the National Championship game before a 1-loss team does.

Perception is a big part of college football, it’s what drives ratings, media coverage and conference realignment. All college football teams can do is play their schedules and play like every game matters. Who knew that Northwestern would lose 6-straight after their big game against the Buckeyes? Who knew Michigan would save their best game of the season for their rival to the south? Who would have thought Florida State would play Duke for the ACC FOOTBALL Championship? We have a tendency to punish teams for what other teams in their conference do . Why should any team try to benefit teams in their own conference? They are trying to beat them to win a conference championship. Yet if the other teams in their conference don’t do well, they are judged as not worthy to play for a national championship.

This problem isn’t going away with the new playoff system. There will still be debate and passion on both sides. The only way this can be solved is if every conference champion is invited to the playoffs. That includes the MAC, Mountain West and American conferences. Unfortunately, that won’t happen for quite a long time.

So, we are stuck with the system we have. If there are 2 teams from a power conference that are undefeated, they should play for the national championship regardless of what people think about their conferences.
