Nick Townsend, a 4-star athlete from Dekaney High School in the Houston area, has committed to the Texas Longhorns. Ranked as the No. 3 athlete in the nation and the No. 20 prospect in Texas by 247Sports, Townsend chose Texas over Alabama, Texas A&M, and USC.
Townsend excels on both offense and defense. Offensively, he is one of the top tight ends in Texas, versatile enough to play wide receiver, slot receiver, or inline tight end. At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, he has the physicality to withstand press coverage and he uses his reach to win jump ball situations, making him a significant red zone threat. Last season, he caught 18 passes for 431 yards and 7 touchdowns, averaging 23.9 yards per catch.
Defensively, Townsend is a force off the edge with an explosive first step and quick, violent hands. His natural pass-rushing skills and ability to bend around blockers resulted in 76 tackles, 8 sacks, and 11.5 tackles for loss as a junior. Townsend’s elite athleticism is also showcased by his 10.9-second 100-meter dash recorded as a junior.
With over 44 offers he was a heavily recruited prospect by schools from around the country. Townsend’s commitment to Texas brings a versatile, high-impact player who can contribute on either side of the ball. The Longhorns will find a formula where Townsend can fit in and be a difference maker. His skill set to dominate on either side of the ball made him one of the most crucial and valuable prospects on the Texas recruiting board.
