After a lengthy wait Longhorn fans now know who will start at quarterback for the season opener vs. Rice. This morning Mack Brown named Junior QB Garrett Gilbert as the starter, after a laborious Spring that included a heated qb controversy in Austin. The competition kicked into high gear when it looked like Case McCoy or true freshman David Ash might have an opportunity to start. One thing is certain – should Gilbert get off to a shaky start in the first few games do not think Mack and company will hesitate to bench Gilbert for McCoy or Ash.
Texas players and fans can now let out a collective sigh of relief and focus on the more important things – winning football games and getting solid play on both sides of the ball. The Longhorns open play against the Rice Owls this weekend in Austin. The game will be televised on the newly launched Longhorn Network, which is still in negotioations with providers to carry the station. Kickoff time is 7:00 pm.
