What if? Johnny Manziel went to Texas

I just finished the Unexplained documentary about Johnny Manziel and had some thoughts/questions for the board.

1. Who remembers his recruitment. Texas signed David Ash that same year, he was a prototypical prostyle QB out of HS and ranked a decent bit ahead of Manziel who was a small school dual threat kid. Both were 4 stars. Any other reason that people remember that Texas stayed away other than going after Ash?

2. Knowing what we know now, would y'all have preferred to have Manziel as a longhorn? Heck, he could have gotten into even more trouble in Austin and maybe amounted to nothing at all. But what about the heisman winning superstar he was during his freshmen season? Would you trade that performance compared to the 8-4 Texas team that went to the Alamo bowl and beat Oregon State?

3. Man, what, what I would call, luck by Texas A&M. First year in the SEC and they catch lightning in a bottle, a good season on the field and a Cotton Bowl win. Heisman trophy, so much money got donated that year. What if Texas had Manziel on the roster and if nothing else prevented A&M from getting all that shine.

For the A&M fans out there, I'm sure it is pretty conflicting. Their best season in a very long time and a heisman trophy but even during his 2nd year at A&M was pretty subpar on the field and totally flamed out in the NFL and was a disaster off the field.

The documentary doesn't necessarily paint a picture of him getting his life back together either.

Kid was a punk. My step children knew what he was in HS.
This ^^^

Plus, Manziel was a street ball player. Every play was street ball. Manziel was good at it, but his smallest stature (5'9) didn't really help him either. But his reputation as a wild child was widespread.

Manziel was a flash in the pan with a lot of luck on some of the balls he just threw up for grabs.

David Ash was just as good, if not better qb before his concussions. Texas would have had a 10 win season or better if Ash wasn't hurt.

No regrets for not getting "Johhny Football".

Just on this alone, I would have taken him and saved myself a lot of yacking by agsy. Also, IIRC, Akina wanted to offer him as a safety and Mack almost let him. He loved Texas so much that he would have taken the offer and been a Horn. Completely different story written and the Johnny Football moniker would have never applied.

The documentary is interesting, they make it seem like he was pretty straight laced in high school. They show a lot of the highly structured, military like, set up of the football program at Tivy.

I was always under the impression his antics were known as a HSer.

Also, did you know his family wasn't rich. I was also under the impression he was a wild rich kid in HS. Turns out that was a lie to explain the lavish lifestyle he was living while making money for his autograph.

I once dated one of his cousins when I was in college. Of course, he wasn't born yet when that happened. The Manziel family lives in Tyler. Johnny's parents moved to Kerrville but the main family is in Tyler. And they have a lot of money.

The Manziels had an almost mafia type reputation in Tyler. They ran the Oil Palace auditorium, which had concerts and trade shows and what not there. Some of my friends expressed concern for my well being when I dated one of that family. I did get a pretty strong look from the brother before we went out. lol

Yea, my friend also stated they had money.

We all know aggy doesn't lie, cheat or steal. It's their code!

I finally watched that Netflix special on Manziel, wow. While he took money after the Heisman, he lied and cheated before he won it. Remember, aggy doesn't do those things!

I hope the young man is really seeking the help he needs, stays with it and turns himself around.

The absolute biggest thing that would have happened is we would not even one time have to listen to aggy tell us that Johnny Football was better than Vince Young....
Everyone but aggy would take VY over Johnny, it's a no brainer.

My mom taught me if you don't have anything good to say, then don't say anything. Sorry mom, but this tine i am making an exception. I'm going to say what everyone knows: Johnny Manziel is a punk. He went to a punk school. He might change his ways and become a good person - maybe - but that school is and will always be a punk school. There. I said it.

PS - F*ck aggy and the corps they rode in on.

🤘

lol, they still feel Reggie McNeil was the better QB (against VY).

I have Netflix. What is the name of the documentary?

"Untold". There are multiple episodes covering different topics in sports. Pick the Manziel one.

They also released a 4 episode series about the Urban Meyer Florida Gators. I haven't watched it all but many are critical in that it didn't touch on negative aspects of that team much.
