Back in mid-May, Texas landed its first and only running back for the class of 2021. Hallettsville running back Jonathon Brooks committed to Texas, adding to an already loaded depth chart.

“It was close to home and I love the coaching staff and the environment around the campus,” Brooks said on why he chose Texas.

Via 247Sports, Brooks is a three-star running bank with a rating of 88. He’s ranked as the 67th best player in Texas for the 2021 class and the 24th best running back nationally for that class as well.

Brooks, one of 3A’s best players, led Hallettsville to a quarterfinals appearance in the 3A D1 playoffs. On the Brahmas run, Brooks scored 15 touchdowns in four games. In the entire year, Brooks ran for 38 touchdowns with 2,144 yards on nearly 10 yards a carry. Brooks for his efforts was the District 14-3A MVP.

“Just working hard and doing my job,” Brooks said on his success.

Texas was the first division-one school to throw an offer at Brooks and it paid off. He now joins a running back room at Texas that includes Keontay Ingram and Roschon Johnson who combined for 1,500 rushing yards last season. Texas also brings in the top running back in the entire 2020 class in Arizona’s Bijan Robinson.

No matter what happens, Brooks will be ready to go whenever his number is called and wants Longhorns fans to know one thing about him.

“That no matter what I’m going to give 110% effort at all times,” he said.

Texas and the Big-12 appear to be ready to play football this season. The Big-10 and Pac-12 have canceled fall sports, while the SEC and ACC look like they’re ready to play on as well.

Regardless, Brooks has one more year left in high school which for now is also all systems go.

While getting ready to make another run for Hallettsville, Brooks is focused on keeping himself in shape during the pandemic.

“Going to summer workouts at school, and going to field with friends and stuff like that,” Brooks said.

Running back seems to be a position of strength for Texas as of recent and Brooks should add to that tremendously. Four-star running back from Cy-Fair High School, LJ Johnson has also been trending in Texas’s direction as of late.

Brooks who stands at 6’0 and 185-pounds has elite size, speed, and can catch. He can even provide support in the special teams game for the Longhorns. Get excited for Brooks just as much as Robinson because when it’s his time to shine, he’s going to make defenses pay.

He also has some goals for when he arrives on the Forty Acres.

“Definitely put a lot more muscle on my body and really learn the game of football. Fight for that starting spot but also learn from people above me,” Brooks said.
