Report: Chris Warren To Transfer From Texas

Time will tell on Warren, but I’m just not a believer. His best performances came against very poor defenses.

It’s been one year into Herman trying to implement what he wants to do offensively, and he experienced a ridiculous amount injuries combined with having to run a true freshmen out there. It’s hard to properly judge the product fairly when you apply all of the circumstances and based on individual performances I don’t think any system would have hid the issues Texas faced personnel wise.

Ultimately the fault falls at his feet, but I’m going to give the man a chance to do things his way because that’s what he is getting paid to do. You aren’t going to get many (if any) coaches to handcuff themselves to a scheme they aren’t accustomed to running when getting them to take a new job. Just won’t happen.

While you may be critical about the personnel usage (Warren in this case) plenty of others including myself are not. The freshmen backs were the best runners on the team and it showed in the latter part of the season as they got more touches.

I think people around here are getting a little tired of hearing "but look at the exciting Freshman we'll have coming back for next year"...  That's basically another way of making excuses for why the current season went poorly.

I agree with you on much of what you said, but even Herman said he expected better. And yes... even though we've gone through several coaches the last few season, Herman should be still be given the same patience any new coach should be given.  However I don't imagine I'm asking questions they aren't asking themselves.

First, If Daniel Young was the best runner on campus, why wasn't he RB1 coming out of camp? RB is the easiest position to stick in a freshman, and people were mystified at the consistent reps given to Porter. It took them 8 games to finally work in Young on a consistent basis, and even then they insisted on sticking with some sort of rotation. It's not like any of these guys are bigger, faster now than they were 5 months ago.  So something just wasn't right with the way they were evaluating players to fit into this offense.

There are other examples, but let's just compare with the defense. The defense was also saddled with several players who had under-performed over the last 2-3 years - Malik being the best example of that. But they did an amazing job of both coaching and scheming players into positions they could excel. It would've been easy for the defense to go young and just say "Wait till next year!", but they didn't do that.

I believe Herman will get it figured out. But I also believe he'll look back on this season and realize he left some birdies out there.

I agree with the sentiment but not the statement "give the man a chance to do things his way because that’s what he is getting paid to do."  He is getting paid to win football games and he handcuffed himself with an offensive scheme HIS team couldn't run. I don't care if its year one or year ten, as a coach you better be prepared to adapt what your doing to find success.
And now we will see if he will adapt. There’s no way of knowing or predicting things were going to be this poor in the spring before the live bullets are firing. So now it’s on him to adapt and make changes.

Trust me I hate looking to the freshmen every year as much as the next guy because it’s the sign of an unhealthy program, but in the case of the RBs it was warranted based on everything I watched.

The only conclusion I can draw from the young backs like Young not getting more carries early is because the coaches didn’t trust him as a pass protector in blitz pickup and that’s something highly valued and a thing young backs struggle with. Porter was/is an average runner, but he does well as a blocker and clearly had the trust of the staff in that regard.

There was obviously a big disconnect with the previous defensive staff and the players. Todd Orlando and his coaches did a great job this year, but they also didn’t hit as much adversity injury wise as the offense did. There was no reason to “go young” because it was obvious that talent wasn’t the issue on that side of the ball and you returned a ton of experience in snaps and starts across the board.

Herman made a few comments in PC's that it was a trust issue with the young RB's.

If I remember correctly, something along the lines of "making sure they go the right way and do what they are supposed to do and maintaining ball security"

When you are expecting Superman and Batman shows up you are probably going to be disappointed initially. Then you realize having Batman is better than having Joe the policeman from the What's going down episode of that's my momma, and you start feeling better.

So you're saying Joe isn't a badass? I never watched that TV show.

@Daniel Seahorn when is the next press conference? Have you heard? Since the game is a ways out do they just not have one weekly? Curious because some good questions will be asked at this one

I still believe in Sam, though he's given me doubts. Mainly I hope all the moxie that an 18 year old kid needs to start at QB for the horns, also meant being a little over-confident. He's been humbled on the field now, and maybe because of that, he'll grow between the ears over time enough to not hurl the ball into bad spots at terrible times.  If he can grow that way, the sky is the limit.

Ditto.

If he can overcome late mistakes he could develop into a good one.  Its been painful to watch though

Ball security has been an issue for Carter. And like I mentioned previously being able to trust them in pass pro is another thing.

I was in the Buechele camp most of the season. After the WVa game I became an Ehlinger supporter. That game was probably the most stress free game this year other than the SJ State game. I 'm not concerned with his turnovers at this point. Last week just reinforced my thoughts about how bad the O-Line has been this year. If he continues with the same mistakes next year then I will worry.

I don't really understand not being concerned with his turnovers, considering they left 4 wins on the table.  Let's say we would've lost the USC game anyway for benefit of the dòubt.  The record would've been 9-3, which is a helluva lot better than 6-6, with a chance for another losing season!  Hook 'em!  Is it the 2018 season yet?

If he weren't a true freshman I would be concerned. After the last few years I have come to expect those mistakes.

UT better do something to keep both Shane and Sam. An OL would be a great start.

My gut is that Shane is gone.  Sucks too because wherever he goes, he only has 1 year of eligibility left.  He's a solid college qb and with the right system he can be really good imo.  I would think he'd be an Hoe-U lean but with Murray there, makes no sense to tranfer and ride pine.  USF is losing their qb and he's played in Gilbert's system...just a thought

I've been told by someone who got it directly from Shane's family that Shane and his family really like Strong. Herman, not so much.

That may be true. But what we know is true is that Shane was a much better fit for the offense that Strong was running.

Shane may simply be looking down the road and realizing he will always be at a disadvantage in this new offense. Hard to blame him and would root for him if he decides to try it elsewhere.
