Time will tell on Warren, but I’m just not a believer. His best performances came against very poor defenses.
It’s been one year into Herman trying to implement what he wants to do offensively, and he experienced a ridiculous amount injuries combined with having to run a true freshmen out there. It’s hard to properly judge the product fairly when you apply all of the circumstances and based on individual performances I don’t think any system would have hid the issues Texas faced personnel wise.
Ultimately the fault falls at his feet, but I’m going to give the man a chance to do things his way because that’s what he is getting paid to do. You aren’t going to get many (if any) coaches to handcuff themselves to a scheme they aren’t accustomed to running when getting them to take a new job. Just won’t happen.
While you may be critical about the personnel usage (Warren in this case) plenty of others including myself are not. The freshmen backs were the best runners on the team and it showed in the latter part of the season as they got more touches.
I think people around here are getting a little tired of hearing "but look at the exciting Freshman we'll have coming back for next year"... That's basically another way of making excuses for why the current season went poorly.
I agree with you on much of what you said, but even Herman said he expected better. And yes... even though we've gone through several coaches the last few season, Herman should be still be given the same patience any new coach should be given. However I don't imagine I'm asking questions they aren't asking themselves.
First, If Daniel Young was the best runner on campus, why wasn't he RB1 coming out of camp? RB is the easiest position to stick in a freshman, and people were mystified at the consistent reps given to Porter. It took them 8 games to finally work in Young on a consistent basis, and even then they insisted on sticking with some sort of rotation. It's not like any of these guys are bigger, faster now than they were 5 months ago. So something just wasn't right with the way they were evaluating players to fit into this offense.
There are other examples, but let's just compare with the defense. The defense was also saddled with several players who had under-performed over the last 2-3 years - Malik being the best example of that. But they did an amazing job of both coaching and scheming players into positions they could excel. It would've been easy for the defense to go young and just say "Wait till next year!", but they didn't do that.
I believe Herman will get it figured out. But I also believe he'll look back on this season and realize he left some birdies out there.
