RE: Rick Barnes

I sincerely hope Barnes lands at a good program like Tennessee.

He's not a bad guy and was a very good coach for us for many years. But we've stagnated and he may not be the guy to get us over the hump. We need new blood and enthusiasm to pay for a new arena. With luck, Patterson won't screw up this hire!
Agreed. He's a stale piece of bread at UT and I wish him luck. He needs to grow tho, learn to not lose his team in late January every year. I do wish him well tho. Looks like he's stepping down by the latest tweets. Hell, he may have already cuz I started this reply without looking at what's new.

I hate always being right.  A week ago I claimed Barnes would resign and we could book it.  Over 2 weeks ago I, also, claimed he would resign before the elite Eight.

Viola!

What is your crystal ball telling you about our starting QB? How about filling out a depth chart for next season?  ;)

JA Adande just slammed Patterson on Around the Horn. Called him out for the 'fire the assistants' ploy.

great. I saw this movie. So who plays the role of Greg Davis and Manny Diaz in this version ?
My exact thought when I read the "staff changes" thought. Worked wonders for the last few years of the Mack era. It all starts at the top, gotta cut the head off the snake to forge a change. I have always liked Barnes, but I would be canned if I wasn't getting positive results at my job, especially after 4-5 years. I also wouldn't receive a golden parachute as the door hit my ass leaving the work place. Time for a change ala ushering in the Chuck F'n Strong era.

The Patterson in Portland story is a really long one.  That franchise had all sorts of issues -- most people remember the "Jail Blazers," but the team had serious financial issues as well.  He got the team over those issues (I think the Rose Garden had to file bankruptcy).  But once he got them through that, I agree, he made a mistake on Ogden over Durant.  I would say, in the grand total, his results in Portland were mixed.

Here is a partial accounting of all he had to deal with there http://www.nytimes.com/2003/12/22/sports/pro-basketball-in-portland-toast-of-the-town-goes-belly-up.html?pagewanted=2
I am no Patterson supporter, but in all fairness, Kevin Pritchard was the GM of Portland that pulled trigger on the Oden over Durant draft pick.  Patterson had already left.

Indeed, he was already gone. From my very good friend at Vulcan, it was partly his inability to make final decisions. But what is crazy, he was in the Durant camp but he wouldn't put his weight behind it. He was busy building a consensus when it really was his decision. Allen wanted him to decide, he's impatient like that. Since Patterson hemmed and hawed his way around the decision ownership said Oden and Patterson quit over it. It got ugly, too but I don't know anything about that.

FYI - I just checked in with UT:

Reminder - nothing is official yet. I was told there is no timetable between Patterson & Barnes.

It's getting so late in the game it would almost look silly not to wait until April 1st and save the 250k for the next coach unless they're working out a settlement right now

I'm sure the buy-out will be prorated based on Barnes next job anyway, right? Most contracts stipulate that the only way we'd pay the full amount is if he's unemployed.

Exactly. He could choose to stay unemployed until the right opportunity comes up. Thus the need for some kind of settlement. Even though we may know better, his resume is going to look excellent compared to other coaches available.

He made the Tournament 16 out 17 years and produced a lot of NBA players. Who ever he interviews with, he will be able to say he did that at a football school just imagine what he can do at a school focused on Basketball.

I have no doubt he will land on his feet but I also have no doubt he's going to be picky about what job he takes next which means he might take a year off if the right opportunity doesn't present itself.

Brian Davis & Kirk Bohls are reporting that UT will fire Barnes, but the University wants the swimming & diving team to have the headline today. The firing won't be until tomorrow.

They also say that UT wants to hire a replacement "within a week".
