Notre Dame is coming to town!

No offense taken. I respect the passion!   I have not seen much from my UT alum interactions (besides my wife, who is a true UT and college fan).  I asked a guy this morning at the Home Depot (who was wearing a UT hat) about the ND game, and he said "they're not in the conference, so if we lose it doesn't matter".  I did not even respond after that...

Just saw the spring game tape with Buechele, and he does look like a better passer than the other options.  What really struck me is how small he looks on the field - both in height and weight!

He seems to make some good decisions.  The D-line was not pushing full force to get to him, but he pulled the trigger a few times in some impressive throws.  Good stuff.

It's interesting, starting a Freshman.  Buechele, from everything that I could see in the Spring Game, was born with his dad's blood, composed of 50% red-blooded American male and 50% ice water.  When I think of the offensive line's mission in the games this year, I'm reminded of Burt Reynold's quote in 'The Longest Yard', "Protect your quarterback!"

In April, after 3 months on campus, Buechele made quick, good decisions, and he was accurate.  He doesn't play like a true freshman.  "Protect your quarterback!", should be the mission of the offensive line.  Warren didn't look like a true sophomore in April, and he didn't play like one.  He showed great patience and the ability the break tackles.  Oh, did I forget to mention that for a big man, he shows a surprising amount of speed.

About that youth on the Texas team, the secondary has a remarkable amount of experience, in spite of the youth back there.

I hope ND is the favorite coming into the game, and please forgive me for saying so, but I hope that they leave DKR fervently wishing they had trained harder and smarter during the summer.  I expect both teams to have first game rust, but I also expect the Longhorns to come in breathing fire.  Make no mistake, if you knock them in the mouth, this Longhorn team will get up and punch your lights out.

I have faith in the Longhorns, who are on a mission this year.  I don't think they will be intimidated by anyone.  I expect a great game, but no one should expect this group of Longhorns to stop playing until the final whistle.

Don't interpret the silence here as apathy, at least from me, but quiet confidence.  I really want to beat ND, after all, they are the 1st team we play.  After that, I want to knock each succeeding team down, one by one, until we are the last one standing.

Hook 'em!

Fred...I respect the enthusiasm...I have to question the "biggest game at DKR in 30 years" ....Not so...When we played Ohio State in 04 or 05 it was with National title implications...We also had title games on the line in 08 and 09....otherwise...carry on.

Well, if the Dline gets close to the qb, the refs blow the whistle.

Ohio State is no Notre Dame, will all due respect...

Of course, I am biased from the conditioning that was bestowed upon me during my 4 years in South Bend.

I'll begrudgingly accept your pointing out of my possible embellishment on this upcoming game.

But it's big.  You have to give me that!

Should be a lot of fun. My group is planning a pretty big tailgate for the day.
Y'all don't forget the HornSports Happy Hour at Black Sheep on Saturday Sept. 3. We will have some Irish fans there also. HornSports is sponsoring the first several hundred beers.

I will be in Austin on Saturday watching CFB all day. I will plan on stopping by for a bit.

Hell, Carrara.  I can have that tapped out with one post at another website before you can say "Bevo".

But I'll be selective with my invites for my "A" crew only at the time being...just some select old roommates and classmates at the current time.  I may be able to drink all afternoon sans tab if I play my cards right.

If you want that Happy Hour to be blue and gold, just say the word...

Java I'm relieved that you quoted Burt Reynolds. If you had quoted Adam Sandler, I would have lost all respect for you. :)

I haven't seen the Longhorns come out victorious over notre dame in my lifetime! I don't want to see a longhorn win, I want to see a good ol fashioned ass whippin like CU got in the 05 CCG! Hook 'em!

I want to see how Texas will attempt to stop Josh Adams and Tarean Folston from gaining their typical 7 ypc...

A demoralizing ground game would be delicious dessert after a long day of BBQ and beverages in Austin.

Bring it back to the old school!

wow Fred!...bold wishes!....I will just tell you right now that I dont expect ND to average 5 yds per carry. Maybe I will be wrong and yall will run at will....but I doubt it. Fact is if yall cant run at will you might be in for a long day....anyway...no use talking smack right now, the game is almost upon us.

another thing.....and I am not trying to start a pissing match here because you have been a decent poster to this point.....I am simply curious as to why you say Ohio State is no Notre Dame?

No offense taken.  I'm not here to throw stones or talk smack.  I'm way too old for that now...

To answer your question,  am biased towards the Irish.  But this is due to empirical evidence and experience.

And wisdom.

If you have not experienced a game at Notre Dame Stadium, complete with the tailgating before kickoff, then I would highly recommend it.  The smell of the grass, the trees turning, the largest and "all-in" fan base of all college football teams.  The stadium.  That fight song.  The campus.  The grotto.  The overwhelming history.  The architecture.   No conference affiliation.  No jumbotron.  No advertisements except a small (N)otreDame (B)roadcasting ©ompany sign next to the scoreboard.  Every game is as important as the next.  It's just a place unlike all others.

Interestingly, I read that Charlie was trying to prep last year's team regarding the magic and history of Notre Dame.  He was showing videos of all of the history and iconic games to the players, the movies, etc...  That may have been a coaching misstep, in retrospect.

I went there for school, and I have fortunate to have been to many college stadiums in the nation.  I am biased, no doubt.  But as impressive as a Michigan or Ohio State or Neyland Stadium can be on college football Saturdays against a Notre Dame team (and they have some of the same smells in the air on a fall day), there's NOTHING like a Notre Dame home game.

But then again, that's what makes college football so damn perfect, isn't it?  Everyone loves their team.  You love DKR and that tailgating scene. That obnoxious cannon (I say that because I have to bring ear protection for my son, which is a nuisance).   I respect that.  I love it as well- but I feel somewhat like a tourist on those Saturdays in Austin.

But the simple fact, that cannot be successfully argued or rebutted, is that there is no better venue for a college football game than at Notre Dame Stadium.  That's just a fact.  It is the benchmark against which all other college football experiences are unfairly judged.

Don't try to fight it, Oldhorn.  Get out there if you haven't already.  I'll won't tell anyone on here that you wore blue and gold if we're not playing Texas...

Enjoy the game!

Oh and to answer your question - I just don't like Ohio State.   Our fans are better, in my opinion, and ND games bring in as much or more fans and hype for away games (given they are both strong teams).

And I appreciate you saying that I'm a decent poster thus far.  I'm just excited as heck about this game.

I have UT season tickets, by the way, and go to as many as I can.  UT is a little further from me than Aggieland, but I make the extra mileage by choice.

Well, that and my wife is a Longhorn.

After Kelly iced your kicker before the end of the first half in 2015, she blamed me personally and would not speak to me all the way back to Chicago.

I respect and understand that...

Here's a little trivia from the 1995 Texas-Notre Dame game.

The punter for each team attended the same high school.

Mark Schultis for Texas and Hunter Smith for Notre Dame both attended Sherman (Tx) High School. My son graduated the same year Hunter did and played on the basketball team with him. Hunter also punted for both the Colts and the Redskins. And I think he now plays in a Christian rock band.

I love me some Hunter Smith. I remember seeing him while at undergrad at pickup games- he was a true athlete. What many people don't know about Smith was how damn fast he was. The guy had wheels.

Check out when he ate up Deion from behind on a kickoff return - it's on YouTube. The guy was fast.

We talked to Troy (co-owner) again today and it's all good.  More info will be posted after we have specifics.
