No beer at DKR in 2014

I may not agree with everything Duke says but I appreciate his efforts. This board would be a bit boring without him.
I disagree with Duke more than I agree with him but, yes, he keeps it lively.

Maybe someone should buy him a drink. Think ECheese would volunteer to do so :D

I would like him to treat us as one fanbase, not rich fans he can milk and loyal fans he can screw. We shouldn't need to do shit like show up late and leave early en masse to be treated equally for concessions.
Reading your posts makes me long for the good old days when I had a hernia.

It just gets frustrating waiting for Steve Patterson to show us why he was the right guy for the job. Nothing substantive has changed with respect to how Bellmont is managing the media image of the program, nothing substantive has changed with respect to plans to improve the game day environment, nothing substantive has changed with respect to generating buzz around the facilities upgrades. If Patterson can't get the small things like beer approved, how is he going to get any of the larger (facilities) issues approved?

Patterson has been on the job eight months and I still can't point to the reason he was hired over any of the other candidates. The University of Texas deserves better.

Hahahahahaha!

You're trying too hard, Randolph. There hasn't been one game and you're complaining about Game Day atmosphere. The beer sales were approved under Patterson, yet because Cigarroa nixed it for this year it's somehow his fault. You say he's been in eight months and somehow you expect facility upgrades to have begun already in the midst of the Athletic dept regime change AND the changes occurring with the School President.

Patience is a virtue.

You guys love restating what I say to change the message. I don't expect facility upgrades to have begun. I expect the issue to have progressed and for some information to be passed along to the alumni. I expect if Patterson makes something (like beer sales) one of his priorities, that he manages to get it executed. I expect to see some demonstration of how his leadership is transforming the athletics program for the better.

At some point, we will have enough information to characterize Patterson's leadership style. We can certainly eliminate dynamic from the list of possible adjectives. So far, he seems to be more of an administrator set on maintaining the status quo than on a leader set on transformation. My main gripe is that when I look at how Bellmont has been executing its responsibilities, I ask myself what exemifies excellence. I see a lot of mildly competent, I see a lot of massive spending, but I don't see much excellence. If there isn't much that exudes excellence and Patterson is someone who dedicated to maintaining and not adept at executing those priorities he sets, is Patterson the right guy to be running the UT athletics program? If so, what can we point to that demonstrates he is the right guy for the job? I'm unimpressed with the guy.

Based on what I've read it is Ciagarroa who is blocking the sale of beer and wine at football games.  Patterson's hands are tied if he is adamant about "waiting for further studies".

I agree with Duke about the lack of communication and media savvy in Bellmont.  We haven't seen anything to get excited about with regards to the Game Day experience and facilities upgrades.

Is this Patterson's fault?  That's up for debate, but I imagine the political minefield Patterson has to traverse is daunting.  DeLoss built an impregnable empire.  It'll take time to clean things up.

This cannot be stated enough. Patterson does not have the luxury of restructuring a private company. The University of Texas is a public university, and jobs are essentially state jobs. They are almost impossible to get fired from. Patterson is having to choose his battles right now.

Regarding media savvy, Vionis should be doing a better job. No question about it. We do not know what is going on behind the scenes with this, and quite frankly, I'm not sure we need to know. We will see how this progresses over the next 6-12 months.

Regarding beer sales: Cig is the driving force behind this stall, and Patterson is toeing the company line with his replies. And although this goes against what RD says, Patterson is not against 70k fans. That's just an ignorant & highly emotional assessment.

What, (other than beer/wine sales,) are y'all looking for in relation to Game Day experience? How about facilities upgrades? I know there's plans for a new hoops arena, although I don't think the location and time line has been determined. DKR is supposedly getting an enclosure of the South end zone, but again, I'm not certain of a time line. What else?

My wish list with regards to facilities upgrades:

  1. Enclose the south end zone with seats, food court, suites, and a Longhorns-Texas Football museum that's accessible for all fans & alumni
  2. A new, louder baskeball/multi-purpose arena in downtown Austin.  Get the students closer to the court somehow!  UL's Yum Center is a good venue and the gold standard for NCAA hoops.
  3. Reconfigure the fences at Disch-Falk by moving 'em in and making 'em asymmetrical.  I'd like to see more offense, and the crazy bounces of the wall are fun
My wish list for the "fan experience"

  1. Beer & wine sales (obviously)
  2. More "Show Band of the Southwest", fewer Godzillatron commercials
  3. Get the student section closer to the field

Dammit Duke you've convinced me. The reign of Steven the Terrible must end. His oppressive measures against the common man have to stop.

You round up the peasants and I'll get the pitchforks . And the beer.

Storm Bellmont!
That is funny stuff right there....

Steve Patterson is the one who decided selling beer at football games was going to be one of his priorities. He chose that. Not me, not Deloss, Steve Patterson. And he failed to execute one of his first big initiatives. If a player on the team fails in his assignment, we don't whip out the Big Book of Excuses and say "That fumble was ok, because the defensive player was really big." Or "Offensive line is really hard to play so missing a blocking assignment and letting the QB get crushed is understandable." We only pull out the Big Book of Excuses for staff and administrators. Why is it so hard for some people just to admit the truth and say Steve Patterson failed to execute one of his first initiatives? He gets an "F" for that assignment. For some reason, we have turned into the program in Texas that wants to give out Certificates of Effort and patting the individual on he back for trying, instead of saying the person failed. That used to be a hallmark of the other school.

As for what Patterson has delivered for the 70,000 fans that are not in the suite seats, exactly what has he delivered? Nothing he has told anybody about. What buzz is there around the beginning of the season? None. Other than a big question mark that is the new staff, what has Patterson done for the fans? Nothing we know of. Patterson's priorities, the 30,000 wealthy fans, get whatever they want because they are a priority. I get it.

I think the 70,000 fans who are simply not a priority need to purposely show up late and leave early every chance they get until Stave Patterson delivers positive change. Cigarroa seems to have wanted to give the finger to the rank and file alumni for supporting Bill Powers the way we did, so he nixed beer sales. Is there any other explanation? At some point, the 70,000 fans who are not a priority for Steve Patterson need to demand change. I know Mickey Mouse was hired to work on changes to the game day experience. It remains a big question mark whether Patterson even has the ability to execute any changes Mickey and his friends suggest. We would have hoped Patterson would be someone who could make things happen. Obviously, we shouldn't take that for granted.

Steve Paterson is obviously not going to be someone who brings change quickly. I am someone who believes the program needs change. I am never going to be pleased with someone who is satisfied with the status quo, who is satisfied with Texas being seen as second rate when compared to A&M or who is able to ignore the message the 70,000 fans are sending by their lack of energy during games. Bill Powers thought Steve Patterson was the right guy for the job. Bill is leaving soon. Maybe the next President will be someone who believes we can do more with our athletics program and Patterson will get replaced with someone who can offer change. I advocate replacing Steve Patterson if he doesn't start delivering positive change and start delivering for more than just the 30,000 wealthy fans of the program.

Good Lord Duke; you're a fool. You'd argue with a fence post about the color of the sky. Hope your miserable life gets a spot of sunshine soon. Must suck to be you.....all the answers but you can't get them implemented. Good luck with all that.

Your perspective here is so far off base and your anger at Patterson is comical.

Have a great day. Mix in a smile for me, will ya?

Hay Duke .... just wanted to let you know when I'm setting down at DKR drinking my beer, I will be thinking about you

Enjoy! Just don't complain about the fans that show up late or leave early. If you are going to exclude 70,000 fans from the party, you take what you get from those being treated like crap.

The AD should be unifying the fanbase, not creating a group of haves and another of have nots. Falling attendance is a problem at a large number of NCAA schools, including many large, successful programs. We already aren't selling out most of our home games. When you enjoy that beer, count the empty seats.

So far you are the only one that thinks "we are being treated like crap". Beer is not going to keep people in their seats winning football games is.
