I'm Hearing

After reading this and what JS put on IT, I'm not sure what I think of Powers.

He is putting a friendship above what is best for the program and basing it off two jilted people's perspective.

Patterson is the one that should be calling this as it is an athletic not academic matter. Powers is out of bounds even as President imo. He doesn't have the expertise and is too close to the situation to be objective apparently.

Hopefully he does the right thing and allows those with greater knowledge of the situation take over and do what is best for the overall health of the program.

Randolph? Anyone? (I'd like the "experts" on Powers to answer this)
These are interesting times for higher education in Texas. The Legislature is cutting funding while the Governor is trying to force a populist restructuring of publicly funded higher education to make a degree attainable to the masses that is patterened after the land-grant degree ideal.

Powers is fighting to cut costs and still maintain an elits publicly funded university offering business and engineering but also liberal arts. His fighting political pressure to eliminate fine arts and liberal arts from public universities in favor of simplified technical degrees has earned Powers a lot of respect from other academics (Powers was elected head of the AAU by his peers).

UT insiders have long sought to advance the university's position amongst the "Public Ivy's" (Cal Berkley, UNCN Michigan, UVa) in spits of substantial budget cuts. Politicians (Perry) want schools like UT to offer a practical, stripped down degree to the masses. The two visions are not compatible. Powers has protected his vision of UT and while it has cost him politically, it has earned him great respect among academics.

Thanks awesome for Powers. He is a damn good academic president. just leave the athletic part to the athletic director. focus on the academic part.

Powers potentially not allowing Patterson to shape the future of the athletic dept with what is likely the single most important hire Patterson would oversee is absolutely ridiculous. If I'm Patterson I'd be highly upset with Powers.

Powers has a lot of friends beside Mack and Deloss. He's a savvy politician on top of that (his job demands it). It would be totally out of character for him fall on his sword for a football coach.

People are looking for scapegoats to take their frustrations out on. Let's wait to see what happens before we call for his head.

The President has to formally sign off on any deal and for that reason, he wants to be kept in the loop. He won't stand in the way of the regents and BMDs decision vis-a-vis the football program.

From an athletic perspective only sounds like Powers is part of the problem and not a solution.

Very disappointing for the athletic side of things.

Please note these thoughts are separate from academics. I don't know enough about all that to even comment.

goodness whatever. I leave for a while and look what happens. This is not good for any of us fans. Hope this will be done by Tuesday.

Hook'em and lets go to the beer joint.......which one!!

Powers has been a GREAT president for UT. I just don't see him using any political capital to affect the employment of a football coach. Powers and the University have too much to lose should Powers squander his political goodwill on losing battles. We can easily afford to lose Mack Brown. We need to keep Bill Powers.

Just posted on twitter... "@kbohls: Joe Jamail tells Statesman that Texas coach Mack Brown "has not made a decision yet" on his future, could come in next two weeks. #statesman"

Remind me why everyone was worried about Powers being ousted? Why did he get protected by the bmd's?

You guys get that Powers is in a tenuous position with the BoR. He has a 1 vote margin to keep his job. The majority of the BOr want Mack gone. If Powers fights for Mack there is the very real chance that Powers will lose at least one vote for a current supporting regent, thus it is inevitable, if Powers wants his job, he sacrifices Mack. This is big boy politics, it doesn't matter what he really wants or his friendship with Mack, this is hardball politics. Mack will be gone, it's only a matter of when and how much noise he makes going out. If he makes nose he will poison his relationship with UT for yrs. I bet he goes out in style with a tearful resignation and all the platitudes by Powers, BOR, AD etc.

Don't like.

Per 247 site staff is bringing in 2 JUCO's for official visits on Wednesday. Both were offered today (DE's).

He's a good Academics president. He's been lazy as an athletics president. Good academics trump that.

Regent Hicks is steering this show.
In S. Hicks I Trust.

I have a serious issue with presidents being involved in athletics.

You want to know why the NCAA is a cheating mess? You want to know why the NCAA is a laughingstock of an organization?

It is because it is run by the presidents who have not one clue about athletics.

Look, that's not a knock on Bill Powers; that's a knock on the way the system is structured.

I'm beating a dead horse, but once again, I continue to argue that there needs to be a complete restructuring of the Organizational Flow Chart of not only the NCAA but the University ADs themselves.

There should be a coach, who answers to an AD, who answers to a GM, who answers to the BOR. The GM would have various specialized members of senior management.

This isn't rocket science. With UT-Austin representing the pinnacle of big business college athletics, it is time they step up and LEAD the way.
For that matter a regent knows about as much on hiring athletics as a president does...

The Hicks brothers are a team and between them they know as much as anybody, anywhere. I've said elsewhere that when the time comes, the Hicks Bros. will be driving this bus. That's a good thing.

I am not trying to be disrespectful, but I dont doubt that the Hicks bros will be driving the bus but I am a little confused as to why they are experts at hiring a football coach? Are we looking at hiring someone with a radio broadcasting background? I guess what I am saying is I would hope that we would rely more on an "expert unbiased panel" to help direct us in the selection process if for some reason we dont get "who" we all want.

Tom Hicks was instrumental in the hiring of our last football coach. I know everyone has soured on that hire 16 yrs. later, but at the time it was deemed a fantastic hire.

Tom (and his companies) have owned the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Liverpool Football Club and the Mesquite Championship Rodeo.

Excatly. Powers has done a lot of great things on the university side, which is where his expertise lies. He needs to leave the Athletic Department in Patterson's hands. The only time he needs to get involved is if there is gross negligence on Patterson's part.
