I'm Hearing

Powers has been a GREAT president for UT. I just don't see him using any political capital to affect the employment of a football coach. Powers and the University have too much to lose should Powers squander his political goodwill on losing battles. We can easily afford to lose Mack Brown. We need to keep Bill Powers.
So true. I don't think a lot of people realize that if Perry has his way, the University of Texas basically becomes a community college. This is about way more than a stupid football coach. It's about keeping this university a place to send our children and grandchildren.

Powers has a lot of friends beside Mack and Deloss. He's a savvy politician on top of that (his job demands it). It would be totally out of character for him fall on his sword for a football coach. People are looking for scapegoats to take their frustrations out on. Let's wait to see what happens before we call for his head.

The President has to formally sign off on any deal and for that reason, he wants to be kept in the loop. He won't stand in the way of the regents and BMDs decision vis-a-vis the football program.
But you cannot deny past presidents have meddled in football matters. In fact, the only coach who lasted longer than Brown resulted in Lorene Rogers meddling in matters she had no expertise in. The result was complete disaster, which in turn resulted in the worst period in the history of UT Athletics. Believe me, I know a little too much about that ordeal.

I believe you are correct, and I am a huge fan of Bill Powers, but I will remain a little skeptical until this matter is over.

Tom Hicks was instrumental in the hiring of our last football coach. I know everyone has soured on that hire 16 yrs. later, but at the time it was deemed a fantastic hire.Tom (and his companies) have owned the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Liverpool Football Club and the Mesquite Championship Rodeo.
If this hire is in the hands of the Hicks Brothers, which I do believe Steven has the leverage here, I will be completely satisfied. They are knowledgeable sports fanatics with a background in sports and they absolutely will hire the best damn coach available. They won't have to evaluate because they WILL convince a blue blood coach to make a shocking transition to UT-Austin, whether that be Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh or some other surprise.

But they've got Nick Saban in the crosshairs and it's up to Powers.

You can't dump all the blame on Rogers for that. It was every bit as much (or more) to do with misguided regents and BMDs (Irwin and Shivers, esp.) as the President. You may as well try to blame Willie Nelson.

:P

Are these the same Hicks' who gave us that historically bad Alex Rodriquez contract?

Asking for a friend.

Yes...but also the same ones that brought us Brett Hull and a Stanley Cup.

If this gets real nasty doesn't Hicks have the ultimate swing vote on Powers remaing as University President? Not that it would be worth allining with Perry but that is a big stick.

He's a good Academics president. He's been lazy as an athletics president. Good academics trump that.
While I don't disagree, there was a plant manager who worked for me a few years ago. I was visiting his plant and complained to him about housekeeping. He said "do you want the plant to run good, or be clean?" I looked at him and sternly said "Both."

I fired him a month later. Point being, at this level you better to do all things well.

Not that it matters but, who posted it first?
I was told this news last Thursday on the way to the Hornsports Happy Hour. The OSU loss and the opportunity for Texas to win the B12 would have curtailed this all from happeing.
to be clear, EM has not posted anything with a time line at all on OB. He was very vague and I even mentioned that his info seemed much like a horoscope.
