This kid was a freshman and this kid is a damned STUD! No wonder Harsin was overwhelmed with him.

If Ash goes down, I am not in the least concerned. Coach Strong has to be overjoyed with this boy.

People expect him to be perfect as a true freshman, but he certainly showed some signs that he has what it takes to be a winner.

I will tell you, first hand, he has EVERYTHING he needs to be successful off the field--great attitude, works as hard as anyone on the team, puts the team's needs first...

He said he couldn't wait to work out this spring with Pat Moorer.

I am high on Swoopes and on Heard. Got two good young ones, Swoopes will have a ton of opportunity this spring, I hope that he does well with it. He is big and strong, surely there is a place for his skill set on the team.

Another thing that clip showed me is that Swoopes has a cannon for an arm and, with that long stride, he reminds me of the way Earl ran. Wow!

That opened up my eyes some. He is faster than I remembered and he does have a cannon. I'm looking forward to next season.

I have always been a Swoopes fan. My biggest concern is his history of injuries. His last year of high school his stock fell because of them. He impressed the staff and fans last spring but lost a lot of time when he was hurt again in the summer. I think it is his hamstrings that he has had the problems with. Anyway, I hope that he doesn't suffer anymore set backs and stays healthy. Even if Ash starts every game Swoopes could still have a package of plays and help the team out.

This is an interesting reply and it got me to thinking. I've already commented how Swoopes has the long stride of The Pearl, and Earl had hamstring problems as well and wore pantyhose to help prevent them. Of course, I don't know if the long strides or the power in running, that both showed, have anything to do with it or not. It was just a thought.

Quarterback does a lot more than run around and throw the ball. Is he the kind of student of the game he needs to be? There's some reason the coaches kept trying to use him last season and couldn't bring themselves to do it. I'm not a fan of playing freshman quarterbacks, but there are some red flags about his development since they clearly wanted to play him.

He has an interesting running style he seems to glide and then have a suddenly burst of speed that covers about 5 yard in 2 steps. His arm is huge and I think with a good off season to work on timing with the #1 receivers we could all be surprised next year.

I think part of the lack of playing time was Mack has always been scared of playing younger players and he felt the need to win so he wouldn't gamble on Swoops over Case. Case was a know quantity in games where Swoops was to much of a wild card for Mack in the close games.

LOL. I wouldn't worry too much about Swoopes being a student of the game. I give you Vince Young, for an example - who made a 6 on the Wonderlic. Yeah, I know, that's an unfair comparison as VY was an alien from another planet and not of this world, but his freshman year was as a RS and his soph year was not impressive.

But Swoopes was a freshman last year and the stunning mis-management of him should be all you need to know about him.

Hmmm, wonder why VY didn't get mismanaged as a freshman.
VY was red shirted as a freshman as Chris Simms was the senior QB, backed up by 3rd year soph Chance Mock. Swoopes played because Case was gawd awful and because we had no back up for him.

Mack Brown had a history of being completely clueless about QB's. Hell, he, unbelievably, considered making VY a DB and actually, equally unbelievably, recruited Manziel as a DB.

Which, by-the-way, exemplifies why, as good as he was, I'm glad Akina is gone. I'm convinced he had terrific influence over Mack and his decisions where to place the players. In other words, I think Akina got first choice - Mykkele comes to mind as well.

Temper the expectations for Swoopes in 2014-15. His learning curve is more than most. If you have ever driven through Whitewright or spent time there, you could just imagine the culture shock moving to Austin and going to a university about the size of your town. The competition that Whitewright plays is as bad as it gets in terms of high school football. I certainly like his athletic upside and could suprise his Junior year, but think next year is just too soon.
