2023 Portal Recruiting (CLOSED)

If you ask me.....and few do....the portal is for desperate programs that are going nowhere.

Has any top player ever come out of the portal?...lots of Bru McCoys type of jumpers there that will never be anyone...
The portal is still in its infancy, but yes. Off the top of my head:

Caleb Williams, J Gibbs at Bama, Drew Sanders, Jordan Addison. There's a few more that transfered pre-portal that did well like Justin Fields and Joe Burrow

Williams just followed his coach. On most of the other guys...ok...thanks for setting me straight.

Ewers was/is an unusual situation entirely....committed to Texas.....switched because he hated the coach....skipped a year of HS and then came here when he ordinarily would have. Kinda weird the way it went down....

He was a beast and still very much under-utilized while at Texas.   He was unstoppable yet didn’t always get priority in the O.
It was a bad offense for him… short sideways passes is a better fit for Smurfs.

I think the ideal is to build your program through HS recruiting; and use the portal to dismiss malcontents and supplement positions that need immediate impact.  The later is done primarily with over-achievers from mid-majors (see Neyor).

Not exactly true...he was very much a priority until Chris Simms left. He probably should have left at the same time. He had to deal with RS frosh VY; which is pretty self explanatory. Had the reigns been Cleary handed over to Chance Mock that year, Roy's numbers and production would have been much higher his last year...

Reading Sark's comments on the 23 class, You gotta think they will be going after a WR or two via the portal (even if they swing Moore).  The talk about depth at that position is obviously on his mind.  Cook and Niblett will be very good, but you never know how fast they can get up to that level.  Worthy is Worthy, no idea if JWhitt is coming back and Neyor is coming off a serious injury and may not be at the same level he was to start.  Hall's departure hurts things some, but Red and Thompson can step in, but they're unproven at this point.

If Jwhitt comes back, the the WR room is good to go for next year.  Red and Thompson can fill in until Neyor gets comfortable and healthy.  If Jwhitt leaves then the Horns have a major gap to fill with unproven talent.  So far, the WR room is looking like this with JWhitt:  Worthy, Jwhitt, Neyor, Red, Thompson, Cain, Alexis, Cook and Niblett (9 total. 8 without JWhitt).

Pretty thin quality and experienced depth there.  Cook could explode on the scene next year like Worthy did, but I don't think you can count on that. Would like to see them get to 11 in that room.  Wisner could possibly move over, but I envision him in the Keilen Robinson role in the future.
Today KXAN covered the Horns arriving in San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl.  They interviewed JWitt at the team hotel.  I don't know if this means he is coming back for next year, but I'm taking it as a positive sign.  ??

He was asked today about it and did not answer either way.

We all want to believe it was coach,  but didn't he get big NIL deal from OSU? Imagined he had to give back 600,000+

I'm not sure how much they make from these deals exactly, but I'm pretty sure Texas would have given him a competitive NIL deal if that was the issue. Herman pissed off a lot of people. Even legacies looked elsewhere.

I belive at that time Texas could not give money to high schoolers but Ohio could. So Ewers took the money route.

Also Roy was hit with the dreaded high ankle sprain early in the season which he dealt with the rest of the year. I want to say this happened in the ou game by the other Roy Williams and one of his infamous horse collar tackles, but I may not remember that correctly. Seemed like he was questionable for every game the rest of the season.

Herman had his QB running the ball between the tackles more often than Larry Csonka.   Would you have wanted to play in that system?
